I accepted this young gazelle’s eyelids
as arrows; they did not miss my vitals.
تَلَثّمَhe veiled his face لمّاwhen بَداhe appeared بالهلالِwith the crescent

When he appeared, he veiled his face with the crescent,
and donned a sharbush cap of darkness from his hair.

متىwhenever سمتُهُI asked him for قُبلةًa kiss أَجْهَشاhe began to sob
Gentle in his coquetry, far beyond reach,
whenever I asked him for a kiss, he began to sob.
لهُhe has أَرَجٌa fragrance كلماwhenever رامَhe intended أنْto
يزورَvisit المحبَّthe lover عليهِagainst him وَشىtold tales
He has a fragrance that, whenever he intends
to visit his lover, gives him away.

ومنْand among عادةِthe habits of البدرthe full moon يُجليit dispels عِشاnight-blindness
He shone forth at evening before the lovers,
and the full moon’s custom is to dispel night-blindness.

And his eyebrow holds its bow,
and his eyelids carry a quiver.

And sated from a cup of youth’s wine,
he carouses with coy airs whenever he grows tipsy.

And a snake-charmer whose beautiful temple bears
scorpions that have outdone Ahnash.
بَذَلتُI offered لهُto him الرُّوحَthe soul فيfor وَصْلهunion with him

I offered him my soul for union with him,
yet love’s judge has no love for bribes.

And a full moon, whose Nathra is my scattered tears,
outshines the crescent that appeared in al-Rasha.
يَكَيْتُunclear; likely 'I wept' وفيand in كَبِديmy liver الواقدِيal-Waqidi (evoking fire)

I wept, with al-Waqidi—the fiery one—in my liver;
so through him my eye became al-Akhfash—the dim-sighted.
فَسُبحانَso glory be مَنْto the one who صَدَّنيturned me away عَنْfrom سواهُanyone other than him
كأنas though بهِbecause of him ناظِريmy eye فيin غشاa veil
So glory to the one who turned me away from everyone else,
as though, because of him, my eye were veiled.

And a bough upon which my heart is a bird,
although it has already been plucked bare by him.
