Whenever its cups are passed among the drinking companions,
It appears among a heedless reveler and a riotous drunk.

One drunkard sways in the tavern in ecstasy,
As the bending branch of the moringa sways.

Another casts off the robe of dignity in wanton abandon,
And another is merry, enthralled by every singer.

وقيلَ لَهُ إنْ كُنْتَ ملآن فازدَدِ
And one drunk on it has sought through it a cure for passion,
And is told, 'If you are full, take still more.'

متى ساوَرَتْهُ للصّبابةِ يَلْحَدِ
A drunkard whom intoxication has undone, save for longing—
Whenever it assails him, he inclines toward longing.

Another leans toward the wine jars, imagining them
Springs of light and mines of gold.

And a joyful man in the vine-arbor's shade, seeking
To harvest every cluster, like pearls arrayed.

The fragrance of Babylonian wine betrays him,
Bewitching the mind of the devout ascetic.

O, the beauty its cups have revealed to my eyes,
And the coolness they have bestowed on my parched heart!

Yet I, praise be to God, hope
For the intercession of Muhammad, the best of the messengers.

A prophet God fashioned as a lamp-niche for His light:
So salvation shone, guiding one who takes guidance from him.

And many a horseman's fire in the land of Persia—
Ahmad's light summoned it toward light: 'Be quenched!'

And that is a sign of deliverance from the blaze
Through him, for fire was extinguished in every hearth.

بمرآهُby beholding him لمnot يَنْشَقَّsplit apart بدرٌa full moon بمِشْهَدِin plain sight
بمرآهُ لم يَنْشَقَّ بدرٌ بمِشْهَدِ
Had the horizons not been freed of all need for luminaries
By beholding him, no full moon would have split in plain sight.

So there is no full moon but his radiant face, through which
The people of Badr won triumph on the morrow.

He drew near, then descended, a bow-span close; nor did
The bow of the Unseen's arrow cast him away like one banished.

Yet he never departed from union; he only
Manifested himself in the attributes of everlasting perfection.

So Al-Aqsa softened for him in tenderness, and scarcely
Could the solid rock be found hard as a boulder for him.

And he returned, like the blink of an eye, to his abode,
To a bed that has ever been the noblest bed.

And part of my honor is that I gained honor by praising him,
And delighted every warbling singer with my recitation.

May God's blessing be upon him as long as lightning gleams
And Najd's east wind blows at the stony tract of Thahmad.
