After you, the tambourines slapped their cheeks,

    and hands shunned those strokes.

And at the wedding, since you have repented, they became alike:

worldly life's heavy rhythms and its light.

And the pipes' clamor rose in sorrow,

while the drinking companions remained devoted to joy.

And the wine-strainers' tears flowed until

the drunkard returned from them, himself drained.

And the wax appeared, through the flowing

of tears, with its eye's pupil stricken.

O imam of the libertines, hear a judge's appeal,

one who never judges unjustly in matters of debauchery.

How did humility taste to you? Is it sweet,

my fellow carouser, by God, or pungent?

May God make the sheikh's repentance firm, for

asceticism is something the weak cannot bear.

You are where you wish, at the mosque of Ayn

and Afif—but how far you are from the chaste!

By a pool and a garden, beneath shade,

from which fruit-clusters have hung down over you.

Do not sink into your lodging, for

only the dense sink in the resting-place.

And when you rise for prayer, rise

    dry-fried, for you are clean.

And if you leap about in the seclusion of

the mosque, tell the disciple, 'I have guests.'

And if you bring out your pouch with its

familiar contents, tell those present, 'This is powdered medicine.'

How fine your dull asceticism! For

with it, you are only a wit among the sheikhs.

I swear, O morsel fried by separation, I am

ravenous with longing, desperate to meet.

I hope for your speedy return,

in hope of you; the lover is affectionate.

Do not say, 'I have put on wool,' for

even the horned ram wears a cloak of wool.

It delights the sheep, as you do with

songs, pleasing its flock's ears and the lamb.

The clipped one flew from you as you shaved your

head for asceticism, and the plucked one escaped you.

Suppose you were given hashish in place of wine,

then a depilated darling took refuge with you,

and you grew adept with Umayra, beating

after beating, until the privy was sound.

How can you be satisfied, after eating

sweets and meat, with spice-mix and a loaf?

Rise, trust in the All-Forgiving, and share

your fare with the libertines, O frail one.

For they have kha, mim, and ra:

what are these letters, by God?

Be frank with the company about what they hid,

for it is a state, our sheikh, already laid bare.

Many a night we spent in an inn's tavern,

and cups circulated among us there,

from the two hands of a full-rumped one—

noses longed to scoop up his shit.

From him we had perfume all night; and the

misreading of one who says 'stale breath' does not [unclear verb].

O Abu Murra, take this sheikh in hand,

    quickly, before autumn passes,

and the canal, and the revelry in it, pass you by,

and its two bony ends—those whom the quay has held.

O Abu Murra, postpone the cup for him,

so that softness and roofs may beguile him.

Show him the jewels of the sidelocks at the

    temples, when those earrings sway,

    and bodies, swaying like spears,

    and glances, unsheathed like swords.

O Abu Murra, by my right over you, reach

him gently, for the gentle may comply.

Perhaps familiarity with habit will stir him

to longing, for the affectionate may yearn.
