رَشَأٌa young gazelle لَحظُهُhis gaze الصّحيحُthe healthy العليلُthe languid
رَشَأٌ لَحظُهُ الصّحيحُ العليلُ
كُلُّevery صَبٍّlovesick lover بِسَيفهِby his sword مقتولُslain
كُلُّ صَبٍّ بِسَيفهِ مقتولُ
A young gazelle whose healthy gaze is languid;
A moment's glance can slay the hale, the ill,
Every lovesick lover is slain by his sword.
Each morn is murdered by its blade so sharp.
لَكَyou have رِدفٌa rump غادَرْتُهI left it رَهْنَin pledge to غُصنٍa bough
لَكَ رِدفٌ غادَرْتُه رَهْنَ غُصنٍ
وَهْوَand it رَهْنٌa pledge كماas علمتُI have learned ثقيلُheavy
وَهْوَ رَهْنٌ كما علمتُ ثقيلُ
You have a rump I left pledged to a bough;
I left behind a sheath hung on a bough -
And it is, as I have learned, a heavy pledge.
A weighty pledge, as you yourself know well.
