محبa lover غداbecame ناحِلاًemaciated فيin الهوىlove
محب غدا ناحِلاً في الهوى
يَكادُalmost لِفَرْطِfrom the severity of الضّنَىwasting sickness أَنْto يَذوباmelt away
يَكادُ لِفَرْطِ الضّنَى أَنْ يَذوبا
A lover has grown gaunt with love;
The lover became emaciated due to passion
he almost melts away, so severe is his wasting sickness.
He was close to melting away from intense yearning
وَرَقَّand he grew delicate فَلَوso if حَرَّكتهstirred him الصَّباthe east wind
وَرَقَّ فَلَو حَرَّكته الصَّبا
لكانَthen he would be نَسيماًa breeze وكانتْand it would be قضيباa slender branch
لكانَ نَسيماً وكانتْ قضيبا
And he has grown so delicate that, were the east wind to stir him,
He became tender, so if the morning breeze stirred him
he would be a breeze, and it a slender branch.
He would have become a gentle breeze, and it would have become a rod
