أَيا سائِلي عنْ قَدِّ محبوبيَ الذي
فُتِنْتُI was captivated بهby him وَجْداًwith longing وَهِمْتُand I was love-struck غَراماwith passionate love
فُتِنْتُ به وَجْداً وَهِمْتُ غَراما
O you who ask me about the stature of my beloved, by whom
O you who ask of my love's stature, whom
I was captivated with longing and maddened by love:
I'm smitten with passion for, fancying infatuation -
أَبىhe refused قِصَرَshortness الأَغصانِthe branches ثمthen رأىhe saw القناthe spears
أَبى قِصَرَ الأَغصانِ ثم رأى القنا
طِوالاtall فأضحىso he became بينَbetween ذاكَthat قَواماof moderate stature
طِوالا فأضحى بينَ ذاكَ قَواما
He refused the branches’ shortness, then saw the spears
He refused the shortness of boughs, but saw the spear
Tall, and so he became of moderate stature between the two.
Tall, so he became, between that, straight.
