My friend, were it not for the toil of collecting grain harvests,

We would not have been caught in these fetters.

No, nor would I be standing in the midday heat,

Straying from a seat in the shade.

Every day brings me a journey and a departure

To the villages, like the wanderers' travels.

On my donkey colt sits the troublesome saddlebag, as though I were

A seller of perfume to women in exchange for bran.

    وَهْو شُغْلٌ لكنّه شغلُ بالِ

    It is collection—but a constriction of the heart;

And it is work—but a preoccupation of the mind.

In such obscurity that, had Qarun's household acquired it,

They would all have toiled with feedbags.

What a journey, on which the All-Merciful blackened

My honor, my appearance, and the back of my head!

On it my looks and my character grew so bad that

If an enemy saw me one day, he would pity me.

Then, after this, this is what they made me:

A witness in their bureau, amid absurdities,

Before one at whom the flanks tremble,

And men move with the motion of mountains.

How could I not be broken, giving testimony among people

Who wanted to slap me and pluck out my mustache?

And my companion there is al-Dilasi, 'Bucket of the Faith,'

    Anku—a pail among pails.

If they brought him writing in Qift ibn Nuh's hand,

He would say, 'This is my handwriting, and these are my words.'

Among people who, if I said, 'I am Ibn Sina,'

    Would fart into al-Ghazali's mustache.

Among them are the great master, Kathir,

And Suwayd, and Zaghbar ibn al-Khayali.

This one cries, 'The emir said: summon the bureau,

And make haste along with the grain-measurer!'

So we come to him, while he, in his conceit,

Holds his nose high above the vizierate.

Then his chamberlains cry, 'Collect! Do not

Collect before collecting the governor's fee,

And beware of ever cleaning grain

With a board in the wind or with a sieve.'

So I cry, 'If this is unavoidable,

Then collect it with the refuse collector's basket,

And guard against the gusting winds, lest

You find it like the effaced remnants of ruins.'

A job in which I never obtain my daily bread

    Except by an idler's trick.

And I wish I could escape, breaking even,

From it one day, with nothing against me and nothing in my favor.

O overseer, who has never ceased

To enrich the oculist's hand with his ready cash:

Every slap that ends in some benefit—

So, as for the nape, even if I shat on it, I would not care.
