    فَكُل النّحس يُنْقَلُ عن مِثالي

    For I am the unluckiest of all humankind and jinn;

so all ill luck is copied from my example.

And when I came to be reviled among people,

I learned debauchery along with trickery.

I roam around people's houses at night,

and bray like donkeys and like mules.

Nectar in the cups is seen as a blaze

when it is mixed with limpid water.

    يُخامِرُني فُأمسي في اختلالِ

    It is wine, in whose keeping my reason lies;

it takes hold of me, and I end up deranged.

At times, then, I recite exquisite poetry,

and at other times I clown about like a shadow-puppet.

And you see me a match for the singers

    whenever I behold a dark-eyed beauty.

And how often I have ended up roaming about, stupefied,

with the mendicants, dancing in ropes.

You think I have rapture and spiritual ecstasy,

yet I have only stray wanderings in error.

And consuming mice and grain brews is my habit,

with the buffoon Antar or Bilal.

I collected money in the market, baring the top of my shoulder,

and collect with torches and skewers.

And I made bears dance and went collecting money

for a monkey that had learned from my antics.

And I taught dogs to dance after my example,

and tamed the snakes in baskets.

And I returned to gambling in a thief's house,

with a backgammon die, foul in my deeds.

And how often I made two rams butt one another,

and forced the roosters to fight.

But I saw learning as an adornment,

so I returned to the schools and disputation.

And I repented, then gave judgments among the jurists,

and issued rulings on the forbidden and the lawful.

And in composing poetry, I became unrivaled,

and through it surpassed the Seven Long Odes.

And I scanned poetic meter with fāʿilātun,

with metrical pegs and heavy cords.

And in grammar, the accusative—swindling—is my art,

practiced on anyone with rank and wealth.

And I doctored humankind—how many people

I have killed with constipation and diarrhea!

And I treated eyes—how many eyelids

cannot sleep through the nights because of my kohl!

And I became a man of standing among the philosophers,

practicing sophistry through wrangling and absurdities.

    له البيطارُ يُصْفَعُ بالنعالِ

    And my knowledge lies in herbs and plunder;

for it, the veterinarian is slapped with sandals.

And I returned to the cemeteries as a master preacher,

and their reciter over the decayed, crumbling remains.

And I cast modesty behind my back,

and it never crossed my mind to care.
