إيّاكَ أنْ تَنْبُشَ خَلْفَ الورى

إيّاكَ أنْ تَنْبُشَ خَلْفَ الورى

فَقَلَّ ذو التَنْبيش أنْ يُشْكرا

فَقَلَّ ذو التَنْبيش أنْ يُشْكرا

Beware of digging behind humankind;

Beware to dig behind masks

For seldom is one who digs about thanked.

So few who dig are thanked

ولا تَكُنْ كا إذ لم يَجدْ

ولا تَكُنْ كا إذ لم يَجدْ

في النّبْشِ خَلْفَ النّاس إلاَّ خرا

في النّبْشِ خَلْفَ النّاس إلاَّ خرا

And do not be [kā—unclear], for he did not find

Do not be as one who, when he found

In digging behind people, anything but shit.

In digging behind people’s backs naught but rot
