قلSay لِغُصنِto the branch الأَراكِthe arak tree وَيْحَكَwoe to you تحكيyou imitate
قل لِغُصنِ الأَراكِ وَيْحَكَ تحكي
قدَّthe figure of مَحْبوبَتيmy beloved ولمand did not تخشَyou fear مِنِّيfrom me
قدَّ مَحْبوبَتي ولم تخشَ مِنِّي
Tell the arak branch: “Woe to you! You imitate
Tell the willow's branch, "Woe to you! You relate
my beloved’s figure, and you did not fear me.
The tale of my beloved, yet fear me not at all!"
أناI لولاhad … not غَفِلتُI was heedless عَنهاof her فَماسَتْso she swayed
أنا لولا غَفِلتُ عَنها فَماسَتْ
ماnot تعلّمتَyou learned أنتَyou منهاfrom her التَثَنِّيswaying; bending
ما تعلّمتَ أنتَ منها التَثَنِّي
Had I not been heedless of her, letting her sway,
Had I but turned away from her, she'd not have bent
you would not have learned from her how to bend.”
And you'd have never learned to gracefully enthrall.
