عَوادُناour lute-player عِلقُdarling of الفصيحِal-Fasih (the eloquent one) أمرءٌa man
عَوادُنا عِلقُ الفصيحِ أمرءٌ
يَنبحُbarks أيthat is قدalready صارَbecame هَجاءَa satirist
يَنبحُ أي قد صارَ هَجاءَ
Our lute-player, al-Fasih’s darling, is a man
Our friend has become a chatterer
Who barks—that is, he has become a satirist.
Who barks at anyone, turning abusive
كأنَهas though he قدalready سَقَطَتْfell away دالهُhis letter dāl
كأنَه قد سَقَطَتْ دالهُ
فأصبحَand so became العَوادُthe lute-player عَواءَa howl
فأصبحَ العَوادُ عَواءَ
It is as though his letter dāl has fallen away,
As if he has lost his way
So the lute-player (ʿawwād) has become a howl (ʿawāʾ).
So this friend is now just howling
