You have heard of the slip in the bathhouse,

and understood its story among the people.

What happened happened and is past; yet, for me,

my slip is among the marvels of the days.

I passed in solitude to the bathhouse of Bāb al-

Kharq, while dawn was a white blaze in the darkness.

Hung over from the wine of love, lovesick,

drunk with ardent longing and passion,

I met the beloved, swaying with coy allure,

like a branch on a sandhill, his stature supple.

I said, “My master, over here!” He

said, “Here,” with a lovely smile.

And he stripped naked, like a sword when bared

by the smith from the sword's scabbard.

He shone amid two nights: a girdle of hair

and his locks—like the moon at its fullest.

And he was covered in sweat's pearls—necklaces

of pearls scattered, without a string.

When his hidden beauty mark let slip

    news of his telltale cheek-down,

the rose swore that his cheeks were more radiant

than itself when the clouds' drizzle shaded it.

Then strands of musk were revealed from the camphor

of his flanks by the attendant's fingertips.

And he appeared from the lote tree's fine silk, in a garden

of beauty, the roses of his cheeks blooming.

And the water flowed over him like a passionate lover,

rather, like my tears for Aḥmar al-ʿAlām.

So delicate, he almost melted with the water,

and streamed down over that throng.

Then the hairdresser's hand swooped with the comb

toward the dawn of his hair-parting, to divide it.

I said, “Comb the beloved's hair with care,

and ease my madness over this young man.

Then braid it with hearts, as desired

by my yearning for his love and my rapture.”

    وَسَلوا عن صَبابتي الحمّامي

    And in my eyelid was as much purifying water as he wished;

ask the bath attendant about my yearning.

Then, when they loosened the towels, they gave off

fragrance as they were unfolded amid the throng.

So we suspected the beauty mark's beautifier—I mean

ʿAnbar, rather than any of the other attendants.

They drew the water gently from its channels,

and its arrival was greeted with peace.

heart, for scalding tears flowing beyond measure.

How often my tears ran along your watercourse, yet

neither my reproachers nor my blamers knew.

I grew distraught with love; then it seemed to me

as though I had seen him in a dream.

And I stumbled behind him as I was leaving—

    wishes make feet slip.

And he saw me cast down openly before him,

so he charmed me with an incantation of oaths.

stealthily, what lay beneath the veil.

not at all; nor can I endure standing.

Thus I am excused for my absence from service

    and the noble, exalted assembly.

So hear it, O man of virtues, from me,

like necklaces of bubbles upon the wine,

    between earnest ribaldry and jest,

and the lawful and forbidden in its enchantment.

You are my help, my supporter and my refuge,

and my guarantor of bounty, O son of the noble.

And I reverently touch your corner of brotherhood,

and cling to your rope of fidelity.

    وابقَ وافخرْ وَصُلْ وحامِ وسامِ

    Qāsim, be safe, rule, be generous, and bestow favors;

and live on, take pride, wield your might, defend, and vie for eminence.
