وأنتقَدنيand appraise me فإنّنيfor indeed I am موزونُwell-proportioned; weighed
Here is my story—and stories have their branches.
Censure me if you wish, for my measures are sound,
And appraise me, for I am well-proportioned.
Polish me, for a bough I remain, leaves abound,
هذَّبِونيthey trained me علىin التّثنّشيprobably swaying (unclear form) فَقَدِّيfor my stature
غُصنُa bough بانٍof a bān tree تَغارُare jealous مِنْهُof it الغُصونthe boughs
They trained me in [probably swaying], for my stature is
While barren branches in envy abound.
a bān bough that the boughs envy.
Between flank and waist a distance lies,
بينَbetween رَدفيmy rump وبينَand between خَصرِيَmy waist فَرقٌa divide
مثلَlike فَرْقa hair-parting لِرِقّةٍbecause of fineness لاnot يَبينُis discernible
Between my rump and my waist lies a divide,
Unlike any for smoothness to prying eyes,
like a hair-parting too fine to be seen.
By He who blessed me with comely guise,
وَوَحقِّand by the right of الذيthe one who حَبانيَendowed me بالحُسْwith beauty (word continues)
نِcompletion of 'beauty' جَمالاًloveliness تَحارُare bewildered فيهin it العُيونُthe eyes
And by the right of Him who endowed me with beauty—
And a beauty to baffle and dazzle all eyes.
a loveliness that leaves eyes bewildered—
No youth, save one with yearning fraught,
ماnot; no لِصَبٍّfor a lovesick lover يُحِبنيwho loves me غيرother than صَبٍّan outpouring
منfrom عُيونٍeyes تسيلُflow منهاfrom them عيونُsprings
a lovesick lover who loves me has nothing but an outpouring
Could love me, from liquid eyes tears distraught.
from eyes out of which springs flow.
My glances like keen rapiers pierce every heart,
وَلِدَand for crushing (word fragment) كّيcompletion of 'crushing,' with 'my' علىupon القُلوبِthe hearts أختلاسٌa stealthy seizure
وَسُيوفيand my swords لهاfor them الجفونُthe eyelids جُفونُscabbards
And my crushing of hearts is a stealthy seizure;
With swift thrusts that rend eyelids apart.
and my swords have eyelids for scabbards.
