فَبَكىso he wept منْfrom بعدِafter الدّمْعthe tears دَماblood
Al-Burhan was slapped and shown no mercy.
The proof was slapped, yet shown no mercy,
So, after tears, he wept blood.
So it wept tears after which came blood.
قَدْalready كانَhad شَكاcomplained of رَمَداًeye inflammation صَعْباًsevere

He had complained of severe inflammation of the eyes,
It had been almost blind before,
and that slapping worsened his blindness.
But the slap made its blindness total.
وَرَمَىand struck النّوروزُNawruz أخادِعَهُhis neck veins

And Nawruz struck the veins in his neck,
The new year pelted it with lies
until they spent the night complaining of swelling.
Till it complained of being bruised.

The men bloodied him with leather bags,
They bloodied it with festering wounds
which were white hides—no, rather tanned skins.
That once were maidens, now but gore.

They descended upon his shore before dawn,
At dawn they descended on its shore
so through them he saw daybreak as darkness.
And it saw daybreak filled with gloom.

From every youth who appeared with a leather mat,
Each lad let fly with kicks and blows
like a fuller when he was honored,
Like a shoe-cobbler in a rage.

he received seven undiluted draughts through them,
They made it drink seven bitter drafts,
and seventy through them, mixed with water.
Nay, seventy more - and still it drank.
