يَقولونَthey say الطّبيبُthe physician أبوAbu (father of) عَليٍّAli
يَقولونَ الطّبيبُ أبو عَليٍّ
ببَذْلin bestowing الجودgenerosity مبسوطُoutstretched اليَدَينthe two hands
ببَذْل الجود مبسوطُ اليَدَين
They say the physician Abu Ali
The doctor Abu Ali, they say
is open-handed in bestowing bounty.
With generous giving has open hands
فقلتُso I said علمتُI knew ذلكَthat وهوَand he is سَمْحgenerous
فقلتُ علمتُ ذلكَ وهوَ سَمْح
يُضَيِّعُhe ruins كُلَّevery يومday ألفَa thousand عَينeye
يُضَيِّعُ كُلَّ يوم ألفَ عَين
So I said, “I knew that—he is generous:
I said, I know that, he is generous
he ruins a thousand eyes each day.”
Yet wastes every day a thousand eyes
