وَقَدْand indeed بَهرَجَdeclared counterfeit النّقدthe coinage المماحِكthe quibbler ضيعَنيruined me
God help me—an old man my loved ones have shunned.
God has granted me old age after the loss of my loved ones
The quibbler has declared the coinage counterfeit and ruined me.
And the biting criticism of the satirists has worn me out
أُحَمُلI coat شّيبيmy gray hair صِبغةًa dye بعدَafter صبُغَةٍa dye

I coat my gray hair with dye after dye,
I wear my gray hair as yet another dye
yet the dye of the Lord of the Throne is the finest dye.
But the dye of the Lord of the Throne is the best dye

When my head turned gray, a taint clouded my life;
When my hair grayed, so did my life in sorrow
my desire struck my heart with my death.
It threw my heart into the fire of my desires

I tried to hide my gray hair, but it would not hide.
And I tried in vain to hide my grayness
Enough for you: I am a liar in the midst of my beard.
It's enough that I'm a liar with this beard of mine
وَسُمِّتُand I was named طاووسَthe peacock of الملائِكِthe angels إذْwhen بَدَتْappeared

I was called the peacock of the angels when there appeared
I was called the peacock of angels when
my plumage, peacock-colored like feathers, in my [unclear].
My hair waved like feathers in braids

I did not turn gray until love had grayed my heart,
I hadn't gotten old before my heart got old from love
and my gray hair has driven the fair maidens away from me.
My grayness drove away the young gazelles from me

لِذاكَfor that reason دموعُtearful العَينthe eye صاحبُa bearer of دَمعَةِa tear
A whiteness that sets my tears flowing, as though it
A whiteness down which my tears flow as if
were therefore tearful-eyed, the bearer of a tear.
The tears of the eye were the friend of the tear

Fingers of mine cover it with indigo,
And fingers dyed with indigo grasp it
left blue upon completing their task.
Left without loyalty at the blueing

How strange this whiteness, which has soiled
So strange that it whitened in the hands of my beloved
the fine cloaks of my youthful passion before the one I love!
Who loved the eyelids of my youth

Suppose I pursue her with deception and indigo:
And I gave myself to her openly and freely
where are my erection for intercourse and my drive?
So where is my virility now for marriage and my zeal?

I have a companion, his face cheerful beneath its dye,
I have a smooth-cheeked friend in the prime of youth
handsome of face, toward whom my soul has yearned.
The soul yearns tenderly toward his radiant cheek

He donned a robe from the shirts of debauchery,
He donned the garment of dignity
embroidered with dignity and decorum.
Embroidered with gravity and propriety

And though he is marked with gray hair, he—
Though marked with gray, he still
embroidered with dignity and decorum.
Stripped himself bare, youth was his finest garb
وإنْand though كانَhe was موسوماًmarked بِشَيبٍwith gray hair فإنّهُyet indeed he

And though he is marked with gray hair, he—
I see myself as a spotted raven in old age
has shed youth, once the finest robe.

He showed me a piebald crow in middle age,
And if I wake up one of the folk of grayness
upon his head, lamenting him with every cry.
Then I'm neither of Tayy nor are these people my kin

He said, 'If I have become one of the house of Shaybah,
And he wouldn't repent when doubted from every suspicion
I am not of Tayy, nor are those people my kin.'
Except jokingly and teasingly

When he turned gray, he did not repent of his dubious deeds,
When one like me stands guard in the baths
or desist, except with the greatest difficulty.
Gloomy-faced, then falls asleep like a corpse

When, like me, he stands guarded in the bathhouse,
How ugly when his drivel flows from him
his face soot-blackened, then sleeps like a corpse,
His penis stretched out like a laden camel
فياso, how قُبحَهُhis ugliness إذwhen سالَflowed منهُfrom him صَديدُهhis pus

The baths were too narrow for him and his rivals
stretched out like a vessel coated with pitch.

He can no longer bear the bathhouse; constricted are
How he sucked from the pipe the rising steam
his breathing passages, through distress upon distress.
Wetting with it some of his clothes

How often, thirsty, he has sucked from a spouted vessel
Filthy as the water of brayed waterskins
enough water to quench some of his burning thirst!
The noses of those present sneezed from its stench

Its water is filthy, like the water of a soaking trough [uncertain word],
So in its corners were the works of the fuller
so it catches the noses of those present with a sneeze.

In his mouth was the stench of poison

Besides the yellowing in his mouth, there is his foul breath,
So the hand of one who dyes his beard differently is cursed
which, when it wafts forth, lays low the musk in Tibet.
With a dye he doesn't approve, curse it!

May the hands of whoever dyes a faded beard perish,
One night, unexpectedly, Sa'd visited me
with a dye of shit he would not accept; may they perish!
An unscheduled pleasure visit

One night, without an appointment, I was visited
I stood up vigorously as if I were
by Su'ad, for an unscheduled union.
A young man, if not for my shaking and stumbling

I rose to her eagerly, as though I were
She said, "As for your limping, it's obvious
a young man, but for my [unclear affliction] and my trembling.
And I reckon that if not for your shaking, still a lad!"
فقالَتْthen she said هَهَاha! أَمّاas for التصابيpretending to be young فظاهرٌit is plain

She said, 'Ha! Your playing at youth is plain,
I said, "I shake from ecstasy and love
and I would take him for a young man, but for his trembling.'
And only tremble from the excess of my affection"
فَقُلتُso I said لهاto her بيin me هِزَّهُa tremor of الوجدyearning والهوىand desire

ولمand not أرتَعشْI tremble إلاَّexcept لِفَرطِfrom the excess of مَحبّتيmy love
I said to her, 'Mine is the tremor of longing and desire;
When we embraced she found no virility
I tremble only from the excess of my love.'
Where is the strength of eighty years?

When we embraced, she found no erection at all;
She reached out to grasp my manhood
where was my erection, under eighty years' estrangement?
But found nothing except the emptiness of my loins

And she reached toward ..., wanting—
Nay, but a withered, changed by the hand of decay
but found nothing except my testicle's emptiness.
Resisting me in the form of the stubborn

Yes—a wasted thing, altered by the hand of decay,
It shrank when I tried to rouse it
defying me like an obstinate wretch.
Like a prickly hedgehog in its burrow

It shrank when I sought to make it stand,
She rose to my bent, polished neck
like a prickly hedgehog in the body's folds.
I said, "Victory belongs to the steadfast!"
فقامَتْso she went إلىtoward عُنقيmy neck بأدهمَwith a dark one أعوجcurved

Then she went for my neck with a dark, curved,
And I moved toward intercourse, stumbling, saying
polished blade; I said, 'Victory belongs to the cautious.'
"You've taken charge, so treat me kindly today, finish me!"
وَقُدِّمتُand I was brought forward نحوَtoward النّطعِthe execution mat فارتعتُso I was terrified قائلاًsaying

I was brought toward the execution mat and cried out in terror,
She said, "What wrong did I commit?" I said, "Our conceit
'You hold my reins; give me a good death today.
With a beard's dye like crumbled chaff"

What, I wonder, have I done wrong?' She said, 'Deceiving us
"Be rid of me, O you whose teeth have fallen out, sparse
with dye upon a beard like crumbled dry brush.'
As the little water on sprouted barley"

Put away from you the visibly fading [beard], like a jar [text unclear],
When it settles in the hand of an offended one
of water ringed with sprouting barley.
I ask which of the resting places settled it

When it settles in the hands of a reproachful man,
Oh the days of youth and its goodness!
I ask it which places it has settled in.
Oh for my days of indulgence and pleasure!

Ah, for the days of youth and their sweetness!
And the nights when I used to imitate
Alas for the days of my play and pleasure!

I took off my chaste garb after wearing it in youth
every tender, full-breasted beauty.

I cast off my bridle after wearing it in youth,
When a reproacher reproached me in it
new—nor my wearing of its fairest adornment [text unclear].
It diminished with her though it had swelled - hush!

When I was a hyena toward every lion
it would say in her presence, already erect, 'Be quiet!'

Oh the sweet days with Umayra's skin
on his back, whom I finished with my Umayrah.
How often it protected my honor and virtue!

And the days of indulgence I spent with it
How often she kept my honor and my silver safe with her!

And days of pleasure, when I was among ... in them [text incomplete],
Nothing bothered me but the spots and their fineness
I would twist in bed.
And my fidelity to my friends and company

Nothing attracted me but swapping roles and its sweetness,
After the graying of my temples, is there still pleasure?
and the beauty of my loyalty among my companions and comrades.
When those eighty years made me a grandmother

Is there pleasure once both sides of the beard turn gray,
If grayness clothes me in black, I'm still
when those eighty years have worn out my freshness?
Sorrowful for the days the flower of my youth withered
فإنْso if أَلبسَI clothe الشّيبُthe gray hair السوادَblack فإنّنيthen indeed I

Even if I dress my gray hair in black, I remain
I don't care about those who reject me
sorrowful for the days of my youth's first bloom.

I care nothing for the women who have hated me,
if the noble members of my clan are pleased with me.
