وقالوا سَعى يا شمسُ فيك أخرى هوى

وقالوا سَعى يا شمسُ فيك أخرى هوى

وَسَفّهَ منك القَولَ والنّقَلَ بالأَمسِ

وَسَفّهَ منك القَولَ والنّقَلَ بالأَمسِ

They said, “O Shams, another love has schemed against you

They said another strove, o sun, for you,

and yesterday disparaged your words and reports.”

And yesterday belittled your word and news;

فَقُلتُ دعوهُ سوفَ ترمدُ عَيْنُهُ

فَقُلتُ دعوهُ سوفَ ترمدُ عَيْنُهُ

وكم رَمَدَتْ عينٌ منَ السّعْي في الشّمسِ

وكم رَمَدَتْ عينٌ منَ السّعْي في الشّمسِ

So I said, “Leave him; his eye will become inflamed—

I said: “Let him strive on; his eyes will tire,”

and how many an eye has become inflamed from running in the sun!”

How many an eye has tired from gazing at the sun!
