Who can bring him to me, while battle is ash-gray with spears,
Who is with me as the fray rages, stars flashing
On the back of a lean-bellied, sweat-drenched steed?
In the darkness, from a quiver with blunted arrows?

He quenches thirst and cleaves rivals whose eyes
He slakes his thirst and splits the skulls of his peers,
Are red from terror, not red from inflammation,
Their eyes red not with tears but with fright.

بطائر من سنان ليس بالغرد
With every bending bough of a Khatti lance,
At each twist of the winding path
Bearing a spearhead-bird that is no songster.
A bird cries - and it is no songbird.

Time is too treacherous to remain true to you;
Time is too treacherous for things to go your way;
And it gave only grudgingly, and scarcely did so.
It only yielded you profit by accident, nothing more.

إلى الطباع رجوع العير للوتر
And whoever puts on an act returns, after a while,
And he who pretends will return after a while
To his natural ways, as an ass returns to the bowstring.
To his true nature, as the camel rope returns to the peg.
