Oh, how my heart burns for departing companions!
My heart is confused and wavering,
At their traces, my patience will vanish.
My patience over its effects will fade,

ولربما سبق الهبوب ذميل
Young she-camels were bridled for them, racing the east wind;
I have endured many cold nights for him,
And often their trot outstripped the blowing wind.
And perhaps the wind has outrun its course.

They parted from you and burdened you with grief
They left you and loaded you with sorrow,
That Shamah and Tufayl cannot bear.
Bearing what neither benefits nor harms.

برح الجوى لا إذخر وجليل
They sowed its seed in your heart, and its growth
They planted in your heart his love and being,
Is longing's torment, not sweet rush or panic grass.
When the times had passed with no savings or glory.

حذر الفراق سوائح وهمول
I saw them off as they set out, while my tears
I bid them farewell as they departed,
Streamed and poured for fear of parting.
My tears warning of the pain of separation.

غزلان وجرة أهيف وكحيل
And I looked into those howdahs; within their folds
And I looked upon those cheeks and their beauty,
Were Wajrah's gazelles, slender-waisted and kohl-eyed.
Like gazelles, an alluring doe, kohl and dark eyes.
