I stayed among you in penury and destitution;
I stayed among you in penury and want;
had I been free, proud in spirit, I would not have stayed.
had I been free and proud of spirit, I would not have stayed.

And I kept weeping, excusing you, hoping you might
would awaken, though you had slept heedless of generosity.
awaken, though you had slept oblivious to generosity.

No fruit is gathered from your garden,
For no fruit is harvested from your garden,
nor does your sky pour down in steady rains.
nor does your sky pour down steady rains.

I have no sustenance among you, but I shall seek it
across the earth, if provisions are allotted in shares.
throughout the earth, if sustenance comes by allotted shares.

I am a man: should the land of al-Andalus prove inhospitable to me,
I am a man: if the land of al-Andalus spurns me,
I shall go to Iraq, and it will rise to its feet for me.
I go to Iraq, and it rises to its feet for me.

I build hope and eminence upon vigilant resolve,
A son of hope and high honor, born of vigilant resolve,
one that assails its foes even in the sacred months.
he raids his enemies in the sacred months.

If it is an arrow, no quarry escapes its shot;
If he is an arrow, his shot kills outright;
if it is a sword, it is drawn against dauntless champions.
or if a sword, he is drawn against formidable warriors.

Living by learning is nothing but a feeble expedient,
Earning a living through learning is but a feeble expedient,
a trade consigned to the peevish coward who sits at home.
and a trade assigned to the cowardly miser.

May God not break the spear’s shaft, if by it
May God never break the lance's shaft, for through it
eminence is won; may He consign the pen to breaking.
high honors are attained; and may He ordain the pen's breaking.

I ventured deep into the Far Maghreb, but could not attain
in attaining my desires, until I returned bearing regret.
the things I longed for, until I returned with regret.

A low fellow assailed my honor, and I said to him:
And a worthless fellow assailed my honor, so I told him:
Away from me—abuse is no trait of mine.
Away from me! Insulting is not in my nature.

I turned away from him; but had I confronted him,
I would have made him drink viper’s venom distilled from words.
I would have made him drink the viper's venom in words.
