You advanced with the army, its battalions massed,

As though you were the full moon beneath a cloud pouring rain,

Among young men like Indian swords, whose passion

Is love of keen blades and slender spears of Khatt.

And they were enthralled by eyes that were never languid,

Of spearheads that did not sleep when other eyes slept.

Even if they are not wide eyes, they have

Within men's ribs the same effect as wide eyes.

You see the sky as smoke, just as it was created,

And the earth is choked with horses and camels.

The horses walk there—no mere sleek, well-built steeds—

With the gait of budding-breasted maidens in jewels and robes.

Each a lean-flanked steed, whose hoof

Is worthier of kisses than a beauty's smiling mouth.

O host of Romans, your ostrich has fled,

Either from cowardice or from utter weakness.

Nothing clothed you in the amplest garments of disgrace

Except your meeting the chest with the rump.

Woe to you, you people—rather, woe to your mother,

For she bore you for bereavement and loss.
