And I have ambitions that will hurl me into lands

    far away—either Iraq or al-Sham.

And I join the Bedouin Arabs, seeking eminence

through them, and perfect my praise of them with care.

So that riders may carry my poetry

in Wadi al-Talh (Acacia Valley) or Wadi al-Khuzama (Lavender Valley),

and so that the eloquent may know that I am

an orator who taught the doves to coo.

And I have made them rise in every land

as full moons that never lose their fullness.

Thus neither I nor my poems have lacked an envier,

just as a beautiful woman never lacks a detractor.
