And I boast over men with pride enough to fill the earth.

Honor stands unbowed, and the forefathers are illustrious.

Are people equal? They said, 'We are all human.'

For fresh aloeswood and tamarisk are both wood.

O Zuhr, blossom of Iyad—not, as you claimed,

The blossom of the stars; for the eye has no equals.

Truly, I traversed the wastelands, each desolate,

Trackless, its inhabitants a gazelle and a male owl.

There the echo answers one who does not question it.

And there hunger kills one who has provisions.

And the water runs out, though plentiful at its source.

The sand is sand, yet it forms knotted ridges.

And the man is in the rugged lava-field, already scorching,

As though they were the livers of lovers.

Among the worst calamities to befall peoples,

And the best a seeker has sought out for the star.

They emerge flying from the edges of the dust,

As though they were sparks, though they are fire-strikers.

They all departed, taking with them the beauty of the age.

The people have no fault except that they have perished.
