    لو كنت حرا أبي النفس لم أقم

    I stayed among you in penury and destitution;

    had I been free, proud in spirit, I would not have stayed.

    And I kept weeping, pleading an excuse for you, hoping that perhaps you

    would awaken, though you had slept heedless of generosity.

    No fruit is gathered from your garden,

    nor does your sky pour down in steady rains.

    I have no provision with you—but I shall seek it

    across the earth, if provisions are allotted in shares.

    I am a man: should the land of al-Andalus prove inhospitable to me,

    I shall go to Iraq, and it will rise to its feet for me.

    I build hope and eminence upon vigilant resolve,

    one that assails its foes even in the sacred months.

    أو كان سيفا فمسلول على البهم

    If it is an arrow, no quarry escapes its shot;

    if it is a sword, it is drawn against dauntless champions.

    Living by learning is nothing but a feeble expedient,

    a trade consigned to the peevish coward who sits at home.

    May God not break the spear’s shaft, if by it

    eminence is won; may He consign the pen to breaking.

    ومات كلّ أديب عبطة بدم

    Nor may He spill the blood of any valiant champion;

    may every man of letters die bloodied in his prime.

    I ventured deep into the Farthest Maghrib, but was thwarted

    in attaining my desires, until I returned bearing regret.

    A low fellow assailed my honor, and I said to him:

    Away from me—abuse is no trait of mine.

    I turned away from him; had I turned to confront him,

    I would have made him drink viper’s venom distilled from words.
