Fasting has clothed you in the lifespans of the nights,

And brought you reward at the final return.

So may your good fortunes remain immortal,

Vying in duration with the Day of Reckoning.

Glory came to you, trailing his two mantles,

Over a soft plain whose soil is adorned,

With a night-traveling full moon from the sons of al-Zahra,

From whom the cloak of clouds had fallen away.

He branched from prophethood, then stretched

Both his arms toward the best of the Companions.

For Ibn ʿAbbad converged the branches of

Prophethood and the vizierate in one stock.

So let the nights not be deceived by his slumber,

    Nor let faltering ambitions be whetted for him;

For he to whom the predatory lions bowed

Rose above the evasions of wolves.
