    As for the sword's edge, unsheathed above the crowns of heads—

    we have praised, and never blamed, the pen's point.

    أسوسها والخطوب الربد من خدمي

    I do not complain of Time, with the days around me;

    I govern them, and dark calamities are among my servants.

    Were their eye, after sleep, to cast upon me

    a look of suspicion, my foot would shut their eyelids.

    So now I lead my small camel herd to water, unabashed,

    and draw up the great bucket, brimming to its leather straps.

    في نعمة البرء ما يعفو عن السقم

    Nor do I hold my days to account for what they did;

    in recovery's blessing lies pardon for sickness.

    If their morning visitations have worn me down, it is no wonder:

    high aspirations inflict wounds upon souls.

    I remained, my hopes submerged in nothingness,

    or in an existence approaching the rank of nothingness,

    until I rose, with Fortune's eye watching me,

    like dawn breaking from pitch-black darkness.

    I seek refuge from my times in Shahanshah's shade,

    as terrified game takes refuge in the Sanctuary.

    I visited kings so they might bring me nearer to him, as

    an idol-worshipper seeks nearness to God.

    I left them behind, suitors for his service,

    with the same passion for it that I bear.

    They see in me cause for sorrow in their hearts,

    yet the fruits of striving come by allotted shares.

    How often I counseled one whose home is Baghdad,

    and counsel is among the things most apt to attract suspicion.

    He was like one with inflamed eyes whom physicians kept treating,

    but they found no way to cure his eye, and he went blind.

    Such is kinship: whoever fails to honor its sanctity—

    the sword's embrace befits him more than the ties of blood.

    For his sake, all the kings of earth are obeyed,

    and for youth's sake, katam dye is held in honor.

    Out of reverence for him, I would never call another king,

    or credit vultures with the hawk's excellence.

    وما سواه رعاة البهم لا البهم

    Each boasts of the mere bodies he governs;

    all but he are shepherds of lambs, not champions.

    What has flourished in the market of men of merit would not have flourished,

    had his lasting bounty not lasted.

    فالخصب من فعله والاسم للديم

    He gave, and his gifts revived generosity's dead ground;

    fertility is his doing, though the steady rains get the credit.
