ذنبيmy offense إلىagainst الدهرTime أنيthat I ماnot خضعتI submitted لهto it
ولاnor طويتI folded لهfor it ثوبيmy robe علىover درنٍfilth
My offense against Time is that I did not submit to it,
nor, for its sake, folded my robe over filth.

I once lingered longer than a sturdy she-camel at a ruined dwelling;
then I became swifter than a rebuke passing over an ear.
هذيthis بقيةremnant نفسa soul فارقتparted from وطناًa homeland
وفرقةand separation from النفسthe soul تتلوfollows فرقةseparation from الوطنthe homeland
This is the remnant of a soul that parted from a homeland;
and parting with the soul follows parting with the homeland.
نقلتI was taken away عنfrom عقرthe heart of دارٍa home كنتI was آلفهاI cherished it
إلفfondness القرارةthe hollow صوبrainfall العارضthe cloud الهتنpouring copiously
I was taken from the heart of a home I had cherished,
as a hollow cherishes the downpour from a rain-laden cloud,
حتىuntil ترنحتُI swayed فيin إفياءthe shades of دولتهاits prosperity
ترنحthe swaying of الظلthe shadow بينbetween الماءthe water والغصنand the branch
until I swayed in the shades of its prosperity,
as a shadow sways between the water and the branch.
فالآنso now قصرhas shortened باعيmy reach وانتهىand has ended طربيmy joy
وشمرتand girded itself فيfor عقابيmy punishment سطوةthe might of الزمنTime
So now my reach has shortened, and my joy has ended,
and Time's might has girded itself to punish me.
