    Ah, O compassionate king,

How long will the anguished man rebel with his soul?

Shall I trail my robe’s long hem in your shelter,

While guests trail the hem of your bounty?

For if another holds the reins of my fortune,

While I, unlike him, possess noble speech,

Then every hammered piece is wealth, yet

The turns of fortune bring it back to its worth.

What turned me from despair’s path was that I

Was confident that you would not act unjustly.

    يُناخ ببابك الهمُّ العكوف

    So claim time’s inheritance and live praised;

Abiding grief is made to kneel at your gate.

And speak of release to a brother of longing,

Whose gaunt body plays with its shadow.

He has a winter retreat in Jurjan’s countryside,

And among Ghammi’s palms, a summer retreat.
