And an eye whose sweep lay along the sun's course,
A star twinkling in the stream of the sun,
I let it graze on shooting stars while Sadhqa was young,
I grazed it in the prime of youth’s delight,
حتىuntil أرتنيit showed me وعينwhile the eye of النجمthe star فاترةٌlanguid

until, with the star's eye languid, it showed me
Until it showed me the sleepy eye of the star
morning's face, veiled with night's trailing hem.
And the morning’s face veiled by the tail of night.

And a night whose beginning I spent lamenting care,
A night I spent complaining of cares in the beginning,
and at whose end I returned to seek delight's aid,
And by the end I cried for joy and delight,

in a nearby thicket among the thickets of the uplands,
In a swoon of the dells of sadness close to me
darkness stretched a tent-rope over its canopies.
The darkness spread its carpets of plush delight.

Its dweller offered it the froth of wine,
To it the torrent of wine comes settled
and whenever it crept through the grove, the grove bore flames,
So whenever it crept in her, she bore fruitful flame

until, when fire leapt wildly among its tresses,
Until when the fire blazed through its log,
the emerald of its branches turned to gold.
The emerald returned from its branches as gold.

I darted out of it while dawn's mouth smiled,
I slipped away while dawn’s lips smiled
toward a radiant noble who counts what he gives as treasure.
To the most wondrous view the awakened ever beheld.

He has a bright brow like the sun's; were it to flash
With a cheek that would shine like the sun should it
upon night's face, the chameleon would stand erect.
Flash in the night’s sky for the sleepless to behold.

O most bountiful of men in rain and milk,
O most abundant of men in springs and solicitude,
and noblest of men in ancestral roots and lineage!
And most noble of men in origin and ancestry.

I have come to taste abundance from you, even if
I have tasted abundance from you though
the reproachful women say, 'A surmise that may prove false.'
The jealous said it's fancy, perhaps a lie.

فالبحرfor the sea يمنحgrants فضلthe bounty of الريِّthirst-quenching منwhoever شرباdrinks
Indeed, hopes have pledged wealth on your behalf; so respond,
For I am certain of riches from you so answer me,
for the sea grants ample relief from thirst to whoever drinks.
As the sea grants abundance of water to those who drink.
فحسنso the goodness of ظنّيmy opinion قدalready استوفىhas fully attained مدىthe extent of أمليmy hope
وحسنand the kindness of رأيكyour regard ليfor me لمdid not يبقleave ليfor me أرباa wish
So my good opinion has reached the full extent of my hope,
So my good supposition has met my hopes’ extent,
and your kind regard for me has left me no wish unfulfilled.
And your good view of me has left me no doubts.
