I came forward in splendid attire, and they were struck dumb,
They came in splendor of dress, so they were stripped bare
as weak birds gaze at the swoop of a bird of prey.
The gazes of misfortune looked upon the swooping of fate

He fashioned a turban from the robes of glory,
Longing wove from the remnants of pottery a turban
ample, mocking the gloomy bird of ill omen.
And well-being that mocks the gloomy sufferer

And a robe with banded sleeves shared my wasting sickness,
The waistband of the robe conveyed me censure
and smiled, revealing twin strands of bright, spaced pearls,
And my loose outer garment betrayed scattered, evident impairment

like the moon, whose lights cascaded
Like brilliances of the pearl necklace pouring forth
at night over the swirling waters of the flowing inlet.
At night over the turbulent, swimming gulf

And a robe gauzy over both breasts, whose side was rivaled
And the undulations of the breasts contested its embrace
by an ornamental stripe like the curve of an unruly sideburn.
A banner like the zigzag of the zealous stud

You indeed granted me an honored station, and through me was tended
You have brought me the glory of position and cared for me
the heart of Time; and you preserved the face of my praises.
The heart of time and protected the face of my praises

God be praised for our abode, whose wont is
To God belongs our abode which is of the kind
to trail spears over al-Simāk the Spear-bearer.
To drag spears over the towering adversary
