    O you who detain me between the humiliation of rejection and weariness,

    I have no share of you except the pleasure of hope.

    I am content with your phantom—nay, content that mention of you

    should hang, paired with the one who remembers me, in love verse.

    ما أستطيع به توديع مرتحل

    Do not depart, for you have left none of my endurance

    with which I could bid a departing traveler farewell;

    nor any sleep with which I could host your phantom,

    nor any tears with which to weep over a ruined campsite.

    Yes, mine is the radiant resolve that, if found,

    cares nothing for the galloping of horses and camels.

    It attains my desire, despite the reproaching women, from

    the lord of crowns, not one whom bed-curtains have reared.

    You have deepened my sorrow, O night of farewell,

    and you, morning of union, have always been joyful.

    And you, O body, with which fate dealt relentlessly,

    until the hand of pains and ailments wore it away—

    how did you bear wasting illness as they departed at forenoon,

    when you could not bear your longing for them?

    I marvel that sickness should settle in a body

    that, if it wished, could slip past death, unbeknown to its appointed hour.

    Nothing remains of it but a heart he turns about

    in the quest for glory, between white blades and spears.

    His heart is divided at every stage of the journey,

    with longing for glory, not longing for love verse.

    My soul be the ransom, when terror comes upon me at dawn,

    for narrow, sidelong eyes, not for wide eyes.

    To God belongs my body—how enduring its last spark of life

    despite calamities, illnesses, and dread!

    My illness assails a horse-like frame with wasting,

    and calamity strikes in me the face of a mountain.

    And my sickbed visitor sees no figure in my bed,

    and carries armor stripped from the hero.

    كادت تؤلف أعلاماً على السبل

    I remain in place, while my poems travel;

    they have almost formed landmarks along the roads.

    Far-ranging descriptions of the vizier traveled in them,

    like the south wind with a rain-cloud's streaming downpour.

    The verse is recited, though its author is not yet named,

    so glory testifies that the praise is of him and by me.

    I correspond with my poetic gift, and my messengers come from his bounty.

    في مقلة الريم أعلى بغية الكحل

    Beyond him, nothing is kept in reserve for the gems of speech;

    in the gazelle's eye lies kohl's highest ambition.

    الشمس تكبر عن حلي وعن حللِ

    He has no need of the praise you string in verse;

    the sun is too great for jewelry and robes.

    بالجود فهو يروم البذل بالحيل

    But he is a king whose resolves are enamored

    of generosity, so he seeks to give through stratagems.

    He has never said 'no' since his amulets were untied,

    out of stinginess with that word—so we found generosity in stinginess.

    يغني ويقني ولم يورث ولم يسلِ

    enriches and endows, having inherited nothing and asked for nothing;

    يوم القراع ويلقى القرن في الفضل

    and he whose army covers the face of the earth

    on battle day, and who meets his rival in excellence;

    ومن يصيد البزاة الشهب بالحجل

    ومن دمائهم يرحضن في وحل

    The steeds race over a mountain of the slain,

    and bathe in mire made from their blood,

    A people: when they rush forward in bands on battle day,

    their hindmost almost stumble over the foremost.

    A people restrained toward all but the enemy; if they

    raided by sea, not even wetness would cling to them.

    O you whom the kings of the earth have named its shepherd,

    far be disorder from whatever you shepherd!

    فاخلق برأيك أجفاناً على المقل

    Indeed, the kings are eyes upon our days;

    so fashion, with your judgment, eyelids over those eyes.
