You commanded, but I did not hear; I called, but you did not answer.

Ah, if only I knew who is the Lord and who the servant!

You veiled yourself from me through me, so I said that I

Appeared, and you were not hidden; I was hidden, and did not appear.

I sought you from within myself, but saw none other than you.

Is the rule of before and after, then, definitive?

Through you I sat back from you, for my being is your being.

Then, when we sat, you yourself rose, running with us

Toward you; perhaps my being would appear to you.

So I found it in a name called the Unique.

So the being of your most beautiful names multiplies

My being; without that, there would be no distance.

Whoever comprehends them as a lived state will be in Paradise,

And whoever counts them numerically will have a limit.

Mine is distance from you, and nearness arising from your name.

Thus my distance is nearness to you, and my nearness through you is distance.

When you bestow bliss, you find me

Grateful; and if you give me nothing, praise is yours.

The proof of finding you seeks our composite being,

And definition seeks its individual parts in their essence.

For whoever stands among the individual parts, definition is deferred,

And whoever stands in composition—his proof is ready cash.

How wide the gulf between a place whose sanctuary is forbidden,

And—what a gulf!—one borne along whom fortune aids.

When the bearer of the message presses me inwardly,

His purpose lies in dissolving my composition.

Then he breaks away from me, overpowering the self,

When the aim of the pressing reaches the utmost strain.

I keep pace with him until, when an end comes to what

He brought me, I turn on my heel and run.

The one who was present with me wraps me up,

When what the covenant contained has shattered me.

Nor am I, through what I have said, a lawgiver

For my people; but I inherited, and did not overstep.

The spirit visits me one day, when there is one commanding,

And whatever comes to me from either of them, I have no escape.

I played the chess of intellects, directing the game,

And it is mine to accept or reject what appears.

And the master of sacred law and reason amuses himself with backgammon,

Having understood the aim of his play and backgammon.

And between the two lies a chess of backgammon, for whoever sees,

And what the knot confronts passes judgment upon it.

The sovereignty of his love held sway over secrecy,

And a secret prospered whose sovereign was love.

It has sanctities in months appointed,

So one of them stands alone, and the rest are consecutive.

When you behold existence as his existence,

Through that which the fire-stick yields when struck.

But through the wind comes the breath sustaining it,

Called in our usage blowing and burning.

It acts as light and fire act; name it,

Just as both have extinguishing, blame, and praise.

So plunge in with an a-vowel on nūn, since its benefit is universal,

And its mercy; closure is the nature of the u-vowel.

So the full-breasted maidens long for it, for its benefit,

And the lions fear it in their own haunts.
