إذاwhen اختصمَdisputed الجمعانِthe two groups قيلit was said لهمto them كُفُّواdesist
فمنso whoever شاءwishes فيأخذthen let him take ومَنْand whoever شاءwishes فليعفُthen let him pardon
When the two groups dispute, they are told, "Desist."
If two groups quarrel, say to them: desist!
So let whoever wishes take, and whoever wishes pardon.
Whoever wishes may take, and whoever wishes may refrain.
وكلُّand every لبيبِdiscerning القلبِof heart فيin الأمرِthe matter حازمٌresolute
إذاwhen جاءهcame to him خيرgood إليهtoward it بهthrough it يهفوhe yearns
And everyone discerning of heart is resolute in the matter.
Every wise-hearted person in the matter is decisive
When good comes to him, he eagerly inclines toward it.
When good comes to him, he rushes to it eagerly.
فيأخذهso he takes it علماًas knowledge منfrom اللهGod زينةan adornment
ولوand even if رواحdeparture عنهfrom him سارhe went فيin أثرهits tracks يقفوhe follows
So he takes it as knowledge from God, an adornment.
He takes it as a lesson from God, an adornment,
And even if it departs from him, he follows in its tracks.
And though it departs from him he follows its traces.

وفيand in عينهits essence عندَin the view of العليمthe knower بهof it صنفa kind
Thus it appears among us in many varieties.
Thus different categories appear among us -
Yet in its essence, to one who knows it, it is a single kind.
In His sight, according to the Knowing One, a single class,
وحيدٌone بمعناهin its meaning كثيرٌmanifold بصورةٍin form
وذلكand that فيin المقولwhat is said والعادةand custom العرفthe accepted norm
One in its meaning, manifold in form.
Unique in meaning though manifold in form,
And that is the accepted norm in speech and custom.
Such is the case in speech and customary usage.
ففيso in أذنيmy ear قِراطٌan earring وفيand on الساقِthe leg دُملجٌan armlet

وفيand at مَفرِقيmy hair's parting تاجٌa crown وفيand on ساعديmy forearm وقفan ivory bracelet
So in my ear is an earring, and on the leg an armlet.
On my ears are earrings, and on my legs anklets,
And at the parting of my hair is a crown, and on my forearm an ivory bracelet.
On my head a crown, and on my arms armbands.

When consensus is reached, no form has
When consensus is reached, no form
any claim to pride over another form, nor any superiority.
Can boast over another form, or take pride.

God's adornment has taken varied forms for me; it
The diversity before me is God's adornment,
is an endowment for me through the Generous One's bestowal of it.
Conferred on me by the Bounteous One as a gift.

Forms have varied, yet the water is one,
The forms have diversified but the water is one,
free of attributes—rather, pure and unmixed.
Transcendent of attributes, pure and unalloyed.

Be content with what has come from it, and add no more,
Be content with what has come from it, and do not increase,
for fear that a replacement may come to you after it.
Lest something come upon you from it afterwards.

It is the Truth; know it with firmly established certainty.
It is the Truth - know it with certainty, decisively,
For there is no contradiction in what I have said about that.
For what I have said regarding it, there is no alternative.
