When one who fears God receives discernment,

as a reward for his piety, together with pardon and expiation,

so beyond this, they seek no further goal

save His highest nearness, necessary and affirmed:

in the Garden of Refuge, then, as realized existence,

and in His garden, meaning—majesty and reverence.

For the Essence's drawing near through spatial nearness

is impossible for It; hold firmly to that, reinforcing it.

Blessed are You, God, in every form.

Thus it came in the Qur’an: magnify Him greatly.

And You prescribed: “God is greater than such-and-such,”

so Your saying utterly bewildered the people of thought.

Thus you see those versed in realities have tucked up

their hems, keeping wholly clear of engaging in it.

    ولو سلَّموه مثلنا كان توفيرا

    And people of intellect interpreted it through their thought;

and had they accepted it as we did, that would have been reverence.

Indeed, God, the All-Knowing, uttered a saying:

through his conceits about it, it utterly destroys him.
