لماwhen قرأتُI read كتاباًa book ليسis not فيabout سيركyour ways
علمتُI learned أنيthat I جهلتُI was ignorant of الأمرthe matter منfrom خبركَyour account
When I read a book not found within Your record,
When I read a book not about your ways,
I knew that, from mere tidings of You, I had not known the matter.
I learned from your account that I had been ignorant of the matter.
إنif كانwas جودُكyour bounty قدalready عمَّencompassed الوجودَexistence فماthen no
فيin الكونthe universe حرفٌa letter تراهyou see it ليسis not فيwithin سيركَyour ways
If Your bounty has encompassed all existence, then
If your bounty has embraced all existence, there is no
there is no letter in the cosmos that You see outside Your record.
letter you see in the universe that is not within your ways.
أنتyou الوجودُexistence فماso nothing فيin الكونِthe universe غيركمُother than you
أماeither وجودُكyour being أوor ماwhat كانwas منfrom أثرِكyour trace
You are existence itself; nothing in the cosmos is other than You—
You are existence; nothing in the universe is other than you—
either Your being, or something born of Your trace.
either your being or what arose from your trace.
فالكلُّfor all أنتyou ومنكand from you الأمرthe affair أجمعُهall of it
إليكto you مرجعُهits return فيin الآيthe verses منof سوركyour chapters
For all is You, and from You comes the whole affair;
For all is you, and the whole affair comes from you;
to You it returns, in the verses of Your suras.
to you it returns, in the verses of your chapters.
إنif كنتI was عينكمُyour very self ولمand did not أكنbe فأناthen I
بكلِّin every حالٍstate لناof ours ماnot حلتI moved away عنfrom نظركyour gaze
If I am Your very self—and if I am not, still I am—
If I am your very self, and yet am not, then I,
in every state, ours, so long as I have not passed beyond Your gaze.
in every state of ours, have not moved beyond your gaze.
بناthrough us وصفتyou were described كماjust as بكمthrough you وصفتI was described أناI
فقلso say بلىyes indeed أوor نعمyes الكلall منfrom قدركyour decree
Through us You were described, just as through You I was described.
You were described through us, just as I was described through you.
So say, “Indeed,” or “Yes”: all is measured by You.
So say 'Indeed' or 'Yes': all comes from your decree.
سبحانَglory be to مَنthe One مجدُهhis majesty تعنوbow الوجوهthe faces لهto him
والكلand all هوHe فلمنthen to whom تعنوdo they bow علىaccording to نظركyour view
Glory to Him before whose majesty all faces bow;
Glory to the One before whose majesty faces bow!
and all is He—before whom, then, do they bow, in your view?
And all is He; to whom, then, do they bow in your view?
عجبتI marveled منat سبحاتthe splendors الوجهthe Face يمنعهاholds them back
سدلُthe lowering الستورthe veils عنfrom الإحراقburning منfrom بصركyour gaze
I marvel at the splendors of the Face, restrained
I marveled at the splendors of the Face, held back
by the veils let down from burning all within Your sight.
by the lowering of veils from burning through your gaze.
وليسand does not يحرُقهاburn them أنوارُthe lights وجهكمُyour Face
كذاكthus ترجمinterpret ماwhat أودعتyou deposited فيin زبركyour scriptures
Nor do the lights of Your Face burn those veils;
And the lights of your Face do not burn them.
thus interpret what I have lodged in Your scriptures.
Thus interpret what you have deposited in your scriptures.
قلsay للذيto the one whom أنتَyou فيin الأكوانِthe worlds تطلبهyou seek him
قدindeed خبتَyou have failed واللهby God ياO مغرورُdeluded one فيin سفركyour journey
Say to the one who seeks You among the worlds:
Say to the one whom you seek among the worlds:
“You have failed—by God, deluded one—in your journey.”
You have failed, by God, O deluded one, in your journey.
ياO ربِّmy Lord هذاthis الذيthe one whose ذكرتyou recounted قصتهhis story
بأنَّin that نعمتكمyour blessing نجتهsaved him فيin سحركyour predawn hour
My Lord, this is the one whose tale I told:
O my Lord, this is the one whose story you recounted,
Your grace rescued him in Your pre-dawn hour.
how your blessing saved him in your predawn hour.
ولمand did not أنلI attain حكمةwisdom غرَّاءradiant فيin سمرnighttime conversation
مثلlike الذيthat which نلتهاI attained it فيin الليلِthe night منfrom سمركyour nighttime conversation
Never in evening converse did I attain a radiant wisdom
Nor have I gained radiant wisdom in nighttime conversation
like what I attained at night from conversing with You.
like that I gained at night from conversing with you.
فاحفظso preserve عليَّfor me علوماًforms of knowledge أنتyou غايتهاtheir ultimate end
واعصمand protect عبيدَكyour servants ياO اللهGod منfrom غيركother than you
So preserve for me the sciences whose ultimate end is You,
So safeguard for me knowledge whose ultimate end is you,
and protect Your humble servant, O God, from all but You.
and protect your servants, O God, from all besides you.
فقالthen said ليto me منthe one who وجوديmy being خيركمyour good بيديin my hand
وكلand every ضرharm تراهyou see it فهوthen it منfrom ضرركyour harm
Then He said to me: “From My being, your good is in My hand,
Then he who is my being said to me: “Your good is in my hand,
and every harm you see comes from your own harm.”
and every harm you see comes from your own harm.”
