خبيرٌ بما أبدى عليمٌ بما أخفى
عليfrom me منof التفريغthe emptying منfrom كرمthe generosity of السخِّoutpouring
علي من التفريغ من كرم السخِّ
Well aware of what he revealed, knowing what he concealed
from me: the emptying born of generous outpouring.
خفىhe was hidden بماby what أبداهhe revealed it منof نورِthe light of ذاتهhis essence
خفى بما أبداه من نورِ ذاته
عنfrom العقلِthe intellect والأبصارand the eyes فيin عالمthe realm of السلخshedding
عن العقلِ والأبصار في عالم السلخ
He was hidden by what he revealed of his essence's light
from intellect and eyes in the realm of shedding.
خبرتI experienced وجودَthe existence of الكونthe cosmos فيin كلِّevery حالةstate
خبرت وجودَ الكون في كلِّ حالة
فعاينتهso I beheld it قدindeed حازhad attained مرتبةthe rank of المسخmetamorphosis
فعاينته قد حاز مرتبة المسخ
I experienced the cosmos's existence in every state,
and beheld it having attained the rank of metamorphosis:
خؤوناًdeeply treacherous أميناًtrustworthy صادقاًtruthful كاذباًlying وماand not
خؤوناً أميناً صادقاً كاذباً وما
تقابلتbecame opposed الأحوالthe states الإexcept منthrough الطبخcooking
تقابلت الأحوال الإ من الطبخ
treacherous, trustworthy, truthful, lying—and never
did the states become opposites except through cooking.
خلقتI was created لأمرfor a purpose لاnot أقومI fulfill بحقهwhat is due to it
خلقت لأمر لا أقوم بحقه
وذلكand that لاستعدادِناbecause of our preparedness حالةat the time of النفخthe breathing
وذلك لاستعدادِنا حالة النفخ
I was created for a purpose whose due I cannot fulfill,
and that is due to our preparedness at the time of the breathing.
خُصصناwe were singled out بأسماءِwith the names of الإلهGod عنايةًas a favor
خُصصنا بأسماءِ الإله عنايةً
وبالصورةِand with the form المثلىthe most perfect وأكرمتُand I was honored بالنسخِthrough copying
وبالصورةِ المثلى وأكرمتُ بالنسخِ
We were singled out for God's names as a special favor,
and for the finest form; and I was honored through copying.
خصوصيةًa special favor جاءتcame منfrom اللهGod تبتغيseeking
خصوصيةً جاءت من الله تبتغي
كرامةthe honoring of شيخٍa shaykh نالهاhe attained it زَمَنَat the time of الشَّرخyouth's prime
كرامة شيخٍ نالها زَمَنَ الشَّرخ
A special favor came from God, seeking
to honor a shaykh who attained it in youth's prime.
خصيصٌexclusive بهto him ذاكthat المقامُstation لأنهbecause he
خصيصٌ به ذاك المقامُ لأنه
توّلدhe came into being ماsomewhere بينbetween الغفارِthe All-Forgiving إلىto المرخthe markh tree
توّلد ما بين الغفارِ إلى المرخ
That station is reserved for him, for
he came into being somewhere between the All-Forgiving and the markh tree.
خفيفٌlight معwith الطبعthe nature الثقيلِheavy إذاwhen مشىhe walks
خفيفٌ مع الطبع الثقيلِ إذا مشى
يحوزhe encompasses طريقthe path of الشاةِthe sheep والفيلِand the elephant والرُّخand the roc
يحوز طريق الشاةِ والفيلِ والرُّخ
Light despite his heavy nature, when he walks
he encompasses the path of the sheep, the elephant, and the roc.
خبيئةthe hidden treasure of صافٍṢāf كرَّمhonored اللهGod ذاتَهhis essence
خبيئة صافٍ كرَّم الله ذاتَه
بهاthrough it فلهso he has منfrom نورِهاits light سورةthe surah of الدَّخSmoke
بها فله من نورِها سورة الدَّخ
Ṣāf's hidden treasure—God honored his essence
through it; so from its light he has the surah of Smoke.
