قصداًdeliberately ليلحقنيto bring me بدارِto an abode تبابِruin
Time passes, taking my strength and youth,
Time passes with my strength and youth
deliberately, to bring me to an abode of ruin.
Intent on making me join the abode of ruin
فيحلُّthen it dissolves تركيبيmy bodily structure ويفسدand ruins صورتيmy form
بالفعلِin actuality تحتbeneath جنادلrocks وترابand dust
Then it dissolves my frame and ruins my form,
It undoes my composition and corrupts my form
in actuality, beneath rocks and dust.
Through action, under shrouds and dust
فاعجبso marvel لبعدٍat a separation فيهin it قربُnearness مسافةٍdistance
قدindeed حالhas intervened ماwhat lies بينيbetween me وبينand between صحابيmy companions
Marvel, then, at a separation across so short a distance,
How strange is the nearness of a distance
that has come between me and my companions.
That has come between me and my companions
إنيindeed I أقمتُI have remained حبيسَبيتٍa prisoner in a house مُوحشٍdesolate
فيin غايةِthe utmost degree الشوقِlonging إلىfor الأحبابِloved ones
Indeed, I have remained a prisoner in a desolate house,
I have become a prisoner of a lonely house
in the deepest longing for loved ones,
Yearning intensely for loved ones
مستنظراًwaiting متهيئاًprepared للقاءِto meet منwhoever
يؤتىis brought إليَّto me بهwith him منَfrom among الغيابِthe absent
waiting, prepared to meet whoever
Waiting expectantly for the coming of those
is brought to me from among the absent.
Who will come to me from absence
لكنbut علىwith كرهٍreluctance يكونis مجيئهمtheir coming
فهوso it is همُthey فيin رؤيتيseeing me بأيابِwith a return
Yet they come against their will,
But their coming will be against my will
so, on seeing me, they turn back [wording unclear].
For it is a worry to see them in shrouds
إنيindeed I لأسمعهمI certainly hear them وإنand even if خَفَتُواthey speak softly بماin what
نعطَقواapparently: they spoke وماand not أستطيعI can ردَّto return جوابِan answer
I do indeed hear them, even if they speak softly, in what
I can hear them, though they are muted, by what
they utter, but I cannot give an answer.
They gurgle, and I cannot utter a response
ويكونand is ماwhat كتبتْwrote يدايmy two hands وماand what بهwith it

And what my two hands have written, and what
What my hands have written and what
the tongue has uttered, is recorded in a book,
My tongue has spoken will be recorded in a book
حتىso that تُجازىis recompensed كلُّevery نفسٍsoul سعيهاits striving
يومَon the day الوقوفِexamination عليهof it يومَa day حسابِreckoning
so that every soul may be recompensed for its striving
Until each soul is recompensed for its efforts
on the day it is examined, a day of reckoning.
On the day it stands for reckoning

Then one is rewarded well for goodness, and whatever
Good will be recompensed with good, and wrongdoing
is evil He pardons, considering what is within me.
Will be forgiven and overlooked, what is between me and it
ظنيmy expectation بهof Him ظنٌan expectation جميلٌbeautiful ماnot أناI
فيin الظنِّexpectation بالرحمنof the All-Merciful بالمرتابat all doubtful
My expectation of Him is a good one; I am not
My expectation of Him is a beautiful expectation, I do not
doubtful in my expectations of the All-Merciful.
Doubt the Merciful, I do not waver
إنيindeed I رضيعٌa nursling ماnot فطمتI have been weaned لجودِهbecause of His bounty
كيفhow الفِطامweaning وماand not وقفتُI have stood ببابat a door
Indeed, I am a nursling; through His bounty I have not been weaned.
I am a suckling babe, not yet weaned of His generosity
How could I be weaned, when I have not stood at any door?
How to be weaned when I have not stood at His door?
الجودُbounty أميmy mother والرضاعةand nursing مسكنيmy dwelling

Bounty is my mother, and nursing is my dwelling,
Generosity is my mother, and suckling is my dwelling
and all that I have is from the Bestower.
And all I have is from the Bestower
