الروضُthe meadow منهاfrom it إذاwhen استنشقتyou inhale مطلولdew-laden
This is the constancy in which there is no negation.
This firmness which has no cessation
The meadow from it is dew-laden when you breathe in.
The meadow from which when inhaled is fragrant

شتىvaried تراهاyou see them فتبديلso alteration وتحويلand transformation
For that reason, what is within it emerges in forms,
Therefore it brings forth in various forms
Of many kinds, which you see—thus alteration and transformation.
That you see, changing and transforming

فيهin it فغايتهfor its utmost limit فيin الحسِّsense-perception تبديلchange
Do not rest content with forms you behold
Do not settle for forms you witness
Within it, for its utmost in sensory perception is change.
For its essence is change in the senses

عِلماًknowledge أتاكَcame to you بهwith it منone whom صدقهconfirmed him as truthful القيلspeech
And hold fast to the original substance; with it inscribe
And stand firm upon the original essence, bypass with it
Knowledge brought to you by one whose truthfulness speech attests.
Knowledge that came to you in its honesty of saying

عِلماًin knowledge فماso not هوHe للبرهانِfor demonstrative proof مدلولan indicated object
God is too great in majesty to be encompassed
God is greatest in might, that He be encompassed
In knowledge; He is no object of demonstrative proof.
By knowledge, for He is not for argument inferred
إنَّindeed استناديmy reliance إليهon Him لاnot أكيفهI assign Him a modality
فكيفso how أعلمهI know Him والعلمُand knowledge تحصيلacquisition
Indeed, I rely on Him without assigning Him a modality.
Indeed my reliance on Him I do not qualify
How, then, can I know Him, when knowledge is acquisition?
So how can I know Him when knowledge is acquisition
وليسand there is not عنديwith me منهof Him ماanything that أعينهI specify it
إلاexcept افتقاريmy need إليهfor Him فهوso it is محصولattained
And I have nothing of Him that I can specify,
And I have of Him nothing with which I aid Him
Except my need for Him—that is what is attained.
Except my need of Him, so He is the harvest
كماjust as علمتI have known غناهHis self-sufficiency عنfrom خليقتهHis creation
منfrom اسمهاits name عالماًa world أعطاهbestowed it تنزيلrevelation
Just as I know His independence from His creation,
As you knew His lack of need for His creation
From its name, “world,” which revelation bestowed.
In its name, Knower, the Scripture named Him
كفىit suffices يسرِّحit sets free ماwhat عقليmy intellect يقيدهbinds it
فبيتso the house عقلكyour intellect بالأفكارby thoughts معقولfettered
It suffices; it frees what my intellect binds.
It suffices to free what my mind restricts
Thus the house of your intellect is fettered by thoughts.
So make your mind's home with thoughts reasonable
فصاحبُso the possessor of الفكرthought بالأوهامthrough imaginings فيin جهةa direction
وصاحبand the possessor of الكشفunveiling بالتنزيلthrough revelation مقبولaccepted
Thus the thinker, through imaginings, is in a direction,
So the thinker's thoughts are in one place
While the man of unveiling is accepted through revelation.
And the unveiled's revelation accepted
