This burning thirst within me, born of restlessness,

and what I pour forth of longings and burning pains—

do not think it is for a created being; for we have

the All-Protecting One’s manifestation [uncertain reading] in the creature and creation.

For I see no one in whom there does not abide

the Beloved’s very essence; yet I am in a tunnel away from Him.

    And I see nothing but manifold, varied kinds;

whenever one layer appears, I am effaced from another layer.

So all that has come from Him, or shall be His,

of hardships, is borne upon the pupils of the eyes.

The heart within me knows Him, while He is unknown to

my soul, because of the many attachments it has.

And that is from Him, for God has said to us

that He created the human being from clinging clots.

Whoever is made from clots does not deny what

arises within him of attachments, in orderly succession.

Mine is steadfastness through a root that never leaves me,

and its sway lies in the restlessness within me.

And I see nothing of my own through which to confide

in Him except the flattery within me.

And I have recited over myself—for fear that

the evil eye might strike me on His account—Surah al-Falaq (Daybreak).
