هذيthese المنازلُthe mansions والفؤادُand the heart الساريjourneying by night
هذي المنازلُ والفؤادُ الساري
فيهاin them بحكمunder the rule of تصرُّفthe workings of الأقدارfate
فيها بحكم تصرُّف الأقدار
These are the mansions, and the heart journeys by night
These dwellings and my heart wandering in them
Through them, governed by the workings of fate.
By the decree of the turns of fate
دارتrevolved بهaround it الأفلاكthe celestial spheres فيin فسحاتهاtheir expanses
دارت به الأفلاك في فسحاتها
والكونand the cosmos فيin الأدوارthe cycles بالأكوارthrough the revolutions
والكون في الأدوار بالأكوار
The spheres revolved around it in their expanses,
The spheres have circled with it in their expanses
And the cosmos in cycles, through revolutions.
And the universe in its cycles and revolutions
فإذاso when تحلyou alight بمنزلat a mansion تهفوyearn لهtoward it
فإذا تحل بمنزل تهفو له
شوقاًlonging إليهfor it مطارحُthe landing places of الأنوارthe lights
شوقاً إليه مطارحُ الأنوار
So when you alight at a mansion, there yearn toward it
So when it stays in an abode it longs for it
The places where lights fall, longing for it.
The splendors yearn for it
فيمدّهاso it sustains them بالفيضwith the outpouring فيin غَسَقِِthe deep gloom of الدُجىnight
فيمدّها بالفيض في غَسَقِِ الدُجى
حتىuntil يشمِّرgirds itself عسكرُthe host of الأسحارِthe predawn hours
حتى يشمِّر عسكرُ الأسحارِ
So it sustains them with an outpouring in night's deep gloom,
It gives it abundance in the darkness of night
Until the host of predawn hours girds itself
Until the army of dawn girds up
للانتقالfor departure منfrom البسيطةthe earth قاصداًheading toward
للانتقال من البسيطة قاصداً
جهةthe direction of اليمينِthe right ومغربَand the setting-place of الأسرارِthe secrets
جهة اليمينِ ومغربَ الأسرارِ
To depart from the earth, heading toward
Heading from Al-Basita to the right
The right-hand side and the setting-place of secrets.
And the west of mysteries
ويحلand alights إدريسIdris العليّthe exalted ببوحهwith his disclosure
ويحل إدريس العليّ ببوحه
فيin أثرthe wake of ذاكthat العسكرِthe host الجرارِvast
في أثر ذاك العسكرِ الجرارِ
And exalted Idris alights with his disclosure,
And Idris the Exalted stays with his revelation
In the wake of that vast host.
In the wake of that formidable army
يخفىis hidden علىfrom عينthe eye of المشاهدthe beholder نورُهhis light
يخفى على عين المشاهد نورُه
كالشمسِlike the sun تنفيbanishes سطوةَthe sway of الأقمارthe moons
كالشمسِ تنفي سطوةَ الأقمار
His light is hidden from the beholder's eye,
His light is hidden from the onlooker's eye
Like the sun banishing the sway of moons.
Like the sun obscuring the power of the moons
فالزمهريرُso the bitter cold معtogether with الأثيرthe ether تحكماhave both held sway
فالزمهريرُ مع الأثير تحكما
بالابردِthrough cooling والتسخينand heating فيin الأطوارthe phases
بالابردِ والتسخين في الأطوار
So bitter cold and ether have held sway
So the ether and aether have ruled
Through cooling and heating in the phases.
With cold and heat in the cycles
