    The very essence of the Real in His creation has no

    likeness to be drawn when He manifests through me.

    For a likeness comes to be through an other,

    drawn by the nearest, then the next nearest.

    فإنه الضاربُ والمضرب

    Yet there is no other there, so draw no likeness;

    for He is the one who draws the likeness and its subject.

    And from Him has come His saying: “The

    likenesses—do not draw them for God.”

    For He knows, while creation does not

    know what is there—and this is more wondrous:

    If His creation could comprehend Him,

    He would not be the Lord who is sought.

    When you know that He is thus,

    then be brief about that, or speak at length.

    وذاتنا تكفي فلا ترغبوا

    We have nothing of Him but our own essence;

    and our essence suffices, so do not turn away

    from it; roam its fields,

    for it is the field and the playground.

    فكوننا المأكلُ والمشرب

    The Real’s banquet for us is our existence;

    so our existence is the food and the drink.

    Just as He is the seeker and the sought,

    so He is the one who goes and the destination.
