عفاhas faded رسمُthe trace منthe one whom أهوىI love وليسand is not سواناother than us
عفا رسمُ من أهوى وليس سوانا
وكناand we were لهfor him عندat النزولِthe descent مكاناa dwelling
وكنا له عند النزولِ مكانا
The trace of the one I love has faded; he is none other than us.
The drawing of the one I love has become erased
And we were a dwelling for him when he descended.
And we were for it a place of descent
لقدindeed ضاقwas too narrow عنهfor him أرضهhis earth وسماؤهand his heaven
لقد ضاق عنه أرضه وسماؤه
وبالسَّعةand with spaciousness المثلىthe most perfect لديهwith him حباناhe graced us
وبالسَّعة المثلى لديه حبانا
His earth and his heaven were indeed too narrow to contain him.
The earth and sky have become too narrow for it
And he graced us with the most perfect spaciousness in his keeping.
And with the most ample spaciousness, it has endowed us
وماand not وسعَencompassed الرحمنَthe All-Merciful إلاexcept وجودناour being
وما وسعَ الرحمنَ إلا وجودنا
كأناas though we علىupon العرشِthe Throne العظيمmighty بناناhe built us
كأنا على العرشِ العظيم بنانا
Nothing encompassed the All-Merciful but our being.
And none has encompassed the Beneficent except our existence
As though he had built us upon the mighty Throne.
As if we were pillars upon the Mighty Throne
ولماand when وسعناwe encompassed الحقّthe Real جلexalted is جلالُهhis majesty
ولما وسعنا الحقّ جل جلالُه
نعمناwe delighted بهin him علماknowledge بهof him وعِياناand direct vision
نعمنا به علما به وعِيانا
And when we encompassed the Real—exalted be his majesty—
And when the Truth, Majestic is His Majesty, encompassed us
We delighted in him through knowledge of him and direct vision.
He blessed us with knowledge of Him and vision
ولمand did not نتخذwe take غيرother than المهيمنthe Guardian ساكناa dweller
ولم نتخذ غير المهيمن ساكنا
ولمand did not يتخذhe takes بيتاa house يكونis سواناother than us
ولم يتخذ بيتا يكون سوانا
And we took none but the Guardian as a dweller.
And we have not taken other than the All-Dominating as a dweller
And he took no house that was other than us.
Nor has He taken a house that would rival us
لقدindeed جادwas generous ليto me ربيmy Lord بكلwith every فضيلةٍexcellence
لقد جاد لي ربي بكل فضيلةٍ
وآتانِand he gave me منهfrom him بسطةًexpansiveness وبياناand clear expression
وآتانِ منه بسطةً وبيانا
My Lord indeed bestowed every excellence upon me.
Indeed my Lord has been generous to me with every virtue
And from himself he gave me expansiveness and clear expression.
And given me amplitude and elucidation from Him
إذاwhenever نحنwe جئناهwe came to him علىin كلِّevery حالةstate
إذا نحن جئناه على كلِّ حالة
بضعفwith twice الذيthat which جئناwe came إليهto him أتاناhe came to us
بضعف الذي جئنا إليه أتانا
Whenever we come to him, in any state,
When we came to Him in every state
He comes to us with twice what we bring to him.
With the weakness by which we came to Him
إذاwhenever نحنwe أثنيناwe praised عليهupon him بذاتناwith our very being
إذا نحن أثنينا عليه بذاتنا
وكانand was لناfor us منكfrom you الشهودwitnessing أماناsecurity
وكان لنا منك الشهود أمانا
Whenever we praise him with our very being,
When we praised Him through our essence
And witnessing from you is our safeguard,
And your witnessing was safety for us
علىconcerning كلِّall ماthat which قلناهwe said فيكabout you وعصمةٌand protection
على كلِّ ما قلناه فيك وعصمةٌ
فماso no ثمthere عينٌeye فيin الوجودexistence تراناsees us
فما ثم عينٌ في الوجود ترانا
For all we have said of you, and a protection—
In everything we have said regarding You and infallibility
Then no eye in existence sees us.
