طلبت ذَلولُ عزيزها لتزيله

طلبت ذَلولُ عزيزها لتزيله

عن ظهرها كرماً به فأجابا

عن ظهرها كرماً به فأجابا

The docile one sought her cherished one, to remove him

She asked her beloved to remove him

from her back, out of generosity toward him; and he answered.

From her back out of generosity, so he obeyed

عن إذن خالقها دعتْه لنفسها

عن إذن خالقها دعتْه لنفسها

لذاك لبى طائعاً وأنابا

لذاك لبى طائعاً وأنابا

With her Creator’s permission, she called him to herself;

By the permission of his Creator she called him for herself

he answered that call willingly and turned back.

Thus he willingly complied and turned to her

قد ألبسته من الترابِ لغيرة

قد ألبسته من الترابِ لغيرة

قامت بها حباً له جلبابا

قامت بها حباً له جلبابا

She had clothed him in dust, out of jealousy

She clothed him with dust out of jealousy

that stirred within her from love for him—a robe.

She did it out of love for him as a cloak

مما تحب مقامه في بطنها

مما تحب مقامه في بطنها

ألقتْ عليه جنادلاً وترابا

ألقتْ عليه جنادلاً وترابا

Because she loves his dwelling in her belly,

Of what she loves, his staying in her womb

she cast boulders and dust over him,

She covered him with membranes and dust

حتى يقيم بها إلى اليوم الذي

حتى يقيم بها إلى اليوم الذي

يُدعى ليحضر موقفاً وحسابا

يُدعى ليحضر موقفاً وحسابا

so that he might remain within her until the day when

So that he would stay with her until the day

he is summoned to attend an assembly and a reckoning,

He is called to attend a place of judgment and reckoning

فيفوز بالخير الأعم ويعتلى

فيفوز بالخير الأعم ويعتلى

نحو الكثيب ليبصر الأحبابا

نحو الكثيب ليبصر الأحبابا

and so attain the all-embracing good and ascend

Where he will win the greatest good and ascend

toward the dune to behold the beloved ones.
