فأنا الذي لا عينَ لي موجودُ

وأنا الذي لا حكَم لي مفقودُ
So I, who have no distinct being of my own, exist;
I am the one who has no eye of discernment,
And I, who have no sway of my own, am absent.
And I am the one who has no judgment that is lost.

عُرفاً وبابُ وجودها مسدودُ
ʿAnqāʾ Mughrib, the fabulous phoenix—her mention has become familiar

Known through custom, yet the door of its existence is barred.

The All-Merciful did not make mention of me vain,
The Merciful did not render my mention in vain,

But for the meaning of its mystery I am intended.

It is that I bestow it upon their innermost selves—
It is that I was given their secrets as a gift,
Knowledge of her; thus our path stretches forth.
Comprehending them, so our path is outstretched.

And the wayfarers proceed according to the degrees of their light;
And those walking according to the degrees of their light-
So, for the noblest among them, detachment comes from his light.
The greatest of them is the one stripped of his light.
