    Praise be to God, who

by His grace has favored us,

    through one has brought us

    into bliss from here,

    in a lofty garden,

whose fruit is close at hand.

And its roof is the Throne, just as

    our Footstool is its floor.

If you are a sinful servant,

    God is beneficent;

or if you are a virtuous servant,

God is the Giver of security.

    I speak a third saying,

for it is more fitting for us:

    Praise be to God, who

has taken sorrow away from us.

Nor do I say the like of what

    the infirm say concerning Him:

    Our feet, our feet,

for their truthfulness; then the trusted ones

said just as we have said,

    words sound and clear.

He stands in for us, just as

we stand in for Him [final word unclear].

    All existence subsists

    between blame and praise.

So praise in the cosmos is His,

and blame in the cosmos is ours.

So whatever is ours is His,

and whatever is His is not ours,

except what belongs to us alone,

such as our poverty and our abasement.

    Thus our master related it,

our Bistam, while in his state.

    He said it concerning God,

in his nearness, when he drew close:

    All existence belongs to Him,

and the rule within it is our rule.

So we have seen no other,

and He appeared only through us.

And the like of this—if this be so—

    has left our reason bewildered.

So be through Him, or do not be,

    for He baffles us.

Knowledge is what He sent down

    to me as clear revelation,

    not what we contemplate

about His essence through our thought.

    So whatever error arises

    comes from our conjecture.

Do not reflect upon His essence:

this is what our sacred law has brought you.

    And His prohibition is only

the attribution of thought to us.

Whoever beholds the Real in this way

has worshipped nothing but an idol.

Your affirmation of your God's oneness—

that is the very essence of our polytheism.

And affirming His oneness means only

that you do not see Him as multiple entities,

    فالسبلُ فيه سبلُنا

    as it has reached us from them;

so the paths in Him are our paths.
