Praise be to God—how sublime a protector is God!

All things perish; the face of the One is everlasting.

At the soul's departure, it is said: "Who can heal?"

Would that I knew: is there any healer in existence?

God knows this will not be; and who

can turn back death's cup—or is he the cupbearer?

He is the deliverer when you behold the leg,

on the day of standing before him, entwined with the other leg.

    فقد وسعت الورى جوداً بأخلاقي

    Noble virtues belong to my character and my dispositions;

for through my character I have embraced all creation in generosity.

Had I all that his treasuries contain,

it would not match the provisions I possess.

I was fashioned with the character of our Creator,

and the matter lies between one provided for and the Provider.

So sustenance seeks us; we do not seek it,

and this is a sign of goodness in the roots.

I had not thought the matter was thus from him,

until I knew through my essence that I am the protector.

So none judges us but our own selves,

justly and unjustly—so my malady is my very antidote.

    Knowledge's ordering, favoring our formation—

how often we see that spring from a harmonious decree!

I yearned for my essence, that I might behold it,

for the sake of his image, with a lover's longing.

    شممتُ من عرفها أنفاسَ عشّاق

    The winds of nearness blew upon me from close at hand;

in their fragrance I smelled the breaths of lovers.

Through them was revealed to me what I had not known:

that he is a deputy, a roamer of horizons.

I am indeed a lowly servant; he spent the night submitting to me,

in intimate converse, possessed of rapture and longings.

So you do not see him—since I am within him—boasting

that he is lord of crowns and neck-rings.

He has knowledge of my essence, known to none

except one who has drunk and tasted.

He gazes at me when sight fails to recognize me,

directly, with intellect's eye, not with pupils.

You see him show mercy to whoever calls upon him, out of generosity,

without compulsion or any dictate of pity.

The pitying one has a rule at odds with

the Merciful's rule, owing to its freedom from bounds.

So no description or attribute confines him,

and he enters into no bond or covenant.
