يا أيها المشغوفُ بالذكر

يا أيها المشغوفُ بالذكر

في حالة الإشفاعِ والوترِ

في حالة الإشفاعِ والوترِ

O you enamored of remembrance,

O you who are passionate about remembrance

in the state of evenness and oddness,

In the state of intercession and the night prayer

إن ضاق ظرفُ الدهرِ عن عينكم

إن ضاق ظرفُ الدهرِ عن عينكم

فلم يضقْ عن عينكم صدري

فلم يضقْ عن عينكم صدري

if time's vessel was too narrow for Your essence,

If the circumstances of time have narrowed for you

yet my breast was not too narrow for Your essence.

My chest has not narrowed for your eyes

ما أوسع القلبَ إذ آمنت

ما أوسع القلبَ إذ آمنت

جوارحي بكلِّ ما يجري

جوارحي بكلِّ ما يجري

How spacious the heart, since they have believed—

How expansive is the heart when my limbs believed

my limbs—in all that comes to pass!

In all that comes to pass

لم أدرِ أنَّ للقلبَ ظرف لكم

لم أدرِ أنَّ للقلبَ ظرف لكم

لولا الذي أخبرني سِرَّي

لولا الذي أخبرني سِرَّي

I would not have known the heart had room for You,

I did not know that the heart has scope for you

but for the One who told me my secret,

If not for the one who told me, my secret

عند تجليه لنا طالباً

عند تجليه لنا طالباً

في ليلة يعطى إلى الفجرِ

في ليلة يعطى إلى الفجرِ

when He manifested Himself to us, seeking,

When He manifested to us seeking

on a night of giving until dawn.

In a night given over to the dawn

أنت الذي أخبرتني بالذي

أنت الذي أخبرتني بالذي

فهمت به في السِّرِّوالجهر

فهمت به في السِّرِّوالجهر

You are the One who told me of that

You are the one who told me what

through which I understood, in secret and openly,

I understood thereby, secretly and openly

على لسانِ السَّيِّد المصطفى

على لسانِ السَّيِّد المصطفى

الطيِّب الأسلافِ من فِهر

الطيِّب الأسلافِ من فِهر

through the tongue of the Master, the Chosen One,

On the tongue of the Master of Mankind

pure in ancestry, descended from Fihr.

Of good ancestry, from Fihr

ما جئتكم بالأمر من خارج

ما جئتكم بالأمر من خارج

بل جئتكم بالأمرِ من بحرِ

بل جئتكم بالأمرِ من بحرِ

I did not bring you the matter from without;

I did not come to you with the matter from outside

rather, I brought you the matter from a sea:

Rather, I came to you with the matter from a sea

تلتطمُ الأمواج فيه كماً

تلتطمُ الأمواج فيه كماً

تأتي به الأنفاس في الذكر

تأتي به الأنفاس في الذكر

the waves clash within it as

In which the waves surge, as much

the breaths bring it forth in remembrance.

As breaths come in remembrance

فإن ذكرتم فاذكروه بما

فإن ذكرتم فاذكروه بما

تلاه في القرآنِ ذي الذكر

تلاه في القرآنِ ذي الذكر

So if you remember, remember Him with what

So if you remember, then remember Him with what

He recited in the Qur'an, endowed with remembrance.

He recited in the Qur’an, the Remembrance

لا تذكروه بالذي تنظروا

لا تذكروه بالذي تنظروا

فالفرعُ يُعطي قوّةَ النجر

فالفرعُ يُعطي قوّةَ النجر

Do not remember Him through what you perceive,

Do not remember Him with what you speculate

for the branch yields the strength of its stock.

For the branch gives strength to the root

ذكرته يوماً على غَفَلةٍ

ذكرته يوماً على غَفَلةٍ

بغير ما قلبٍ من الأمر

بغير ما قلبٍ من الأمر

I remembered Him one day in heedlessness,

I remembered Him one day heedlessly

with no heart engaged in the matter.

With other than what the heart intended

فلم أجدْ عند مذاقِ الجنى

فلم أجدْ عند مذاقِ الجنى

طعمَ الذي أعلم بالخبر

طعمَ الذي أعلم بالخبر

So, on tasting the fruit, I did not find

So I did not find in the taste of the harvest

the taste of what I know through the report.

The taste I know well from reports

وجدته كالمنِّ في طعمه

وجدته كالمنِّ في طعمه

والفارقِ الواضحِ بالسُّكر

والفارقِ الواضحِ بالسُّكر

I found it like manna in its taste,

I found it like manna in its taste

and the clear difference lay in intoxication.

And the clear difference in sugar

بالصحو يأتي ذكره دائماً

بالصحو يأتي ذكره دائماً

والقبضُ والبرد مع الوفر

والقبضُ والبرد مع الوفر

His remembrance always comes with sobriety,

With wakefulness, His remembrance always comes

and contraction and cold, along with abundance.

And contraction, and coolness with abundance

والذكر من عندي على ضِدِّه

والذكر من عندي على ضِدِّه

يأتيك بالسكر وبالحرِّ

يأتيك بالسكر وبالحرِّ

And remembrance from me is its opposite:

While remembrance from me is the opposite

it comes to you with intoxication and heat.

It brings you sweetness and heat

فذكره ما بين أذكارنا

فذكره ما بين أذكارنا

بين الليالي ليلةَ القدر

بين الليالي ليلةَ القدر

So His remembrance among our remembrances

So remember Him amidst our litanies

is like the Night of Decree among nights.

Between the nights, the Night of Ordainment

سبحانَ من صيَّرني عالماً

سبحانَ من صيَّرني عالماً

من بعد ما قد كنتُ كالغمر

من بعد ما قد كنتُ كالغمر

Glory be to the One who made me a knower,

Glory to Him who made me a knower

after I had been like a novice.

After I had been like one immersed
