O you discerning scribe,
O wise writer
Your affair is wondrous in the eyes of humankind.
Your affair among people is strange
قرّبكbrought you near السِّيدthe Master العليُّthe exalted
فيممتْso turned نحوكtoward you القلوبُthe hearts
The exalted Master brought you near,
The noble master brought you close
So hearts turned toward you.
So hearts leaned towards you
لماwhen تغيبتyou vanished عنfrom جفونيmy eyelids
تاهتgrew proud علىover الظاهرthe manifest الغيوبthe unseen mysteries
When you vanished from my eyelids,
Since you've been gone from my eyes
The unseen mysteries vaunted themselves over the manifest.
Perplexities wandered the apparent
لولاكwere it not for you ياO كاتبَscribe of المعانيthe meanings
ماnot كانwas ليfor me فيin العلىthe heights نصيبa share
Were it not for you, O scribe of meanings,
Were it not for you, writer of meanings
I would have no share in the heights.
I would have no share in the sublime

So inscribe the birds of wishes, until
So write the bird of wishes until
The fearful, suspicious one trusts you.
The anxious and fearful can trust you
