O ancient House, there rises
O ancient house, come hither
A light of yours, gleaming in our hearts.
A light for you in our hearts shines clear
أَشكوI complain of إِلَيكَto you مَفاوِزاًdesert wastes قَدalready جُبتُهاI traversed them
أَرسَلتُI released فيهاin them أَدمُعيmy tears أَرسالاin streams
I complain to you of desert wastes I have traversed;
I complain to you of the deserts I crossed
In them I let my tears flow in streams.
In which I sent forth my tears streaming
أُمسيI enter evening وَأُصبِحُand I enter morning لاnot أَلَذَّI find pleasure بَراحَةٍin rest
أَصِلُI continue البُكورَthe early morning وَأَقطَعُand I traverse الآصالاthe late afternoons
Evening and morning, I find no pleasure in rest;
I wake and sleep finding no rest
I continue through the early morning and traverse the late afternoons.
I stay up at dawn and journey at dusk
إِنَّindeed النِياقَthe she-camels وَإِنand even though أَضَرَّhas done harm بِهاto them الوَجىfoot-soreness
تَسريthey travel by night وَتُرفِلُand they stride proudly فيin السُرىnight travel إِرفالاwith a proud stride
Indeed, the she-camels, though foot-soreness has afflicted them,
Though the camel litter complains from the load
Travel by night, striding proudly on their nightly way.
It walks on proudly through the campsites
هذيthese الرُكابُthe riding camels إِلَيكُمُtoward you سارَتjourneyed بِناwith us
شَوقاًout of longing وَماand not تَرجوthey hope for بِذاكَthrough that وِصالاunion
These riding camels journeyed toward you, bearing us,
Our mounts have carried us here to you
Out of longing, yet hoping for no union thereby.
Yearning, though hoping not for union
قَطَعَتthey crossed إِلَيكَtoward you سَباسِباًopen wastes وَرِمالاand sands
وَخداًat a brisk trot وَماand not تَشكوthey complain of لِذاكَbecause of that كَلالاweariness
They crossed open wastes and sands toward you,
Cutting through thorns and over sand dunes
At a brisk trot, with no complaint of weariness from it.
And cheek - though it complains not of fatigue
ماnot تَشتَكيthey complain of أَلَمَّpain الوَجىfoot-soreness وَأَناand I الَّذيthe one who
أَشكوI complain of الكَلالَweariness لَقَدindeed أَتَيتُI have done مُحالاsomething absurd
They do not complain of the pain of sore feet, while I am the one
It is not the ache of longing I lament
Who complains of weariness—indeed, I have done something absurd.
But the burdens I bear, having come in vain
