فَأَناso I ماsomewhere بَينَbetween نَجدٍNajd وَتِهامand Tihama
Longing has gone up to Najd, and solace down to Tihama.
Longing triumphed and grief consumed
So I am somewhere between Najd and Tihama.
Thus I'm torn between ache and doom

فَشَتاتيso my scattered state ماnot لَهُfor it الدَهرَthroughout time نِظامorder
And they are two opposites that will never meet.
Opposite pulls that won't align
So my scattered state will never know order.
My scattered self, no order or rhyme

What am I to do? What recourse have I? Guide me.
What can I do, what plot or plan?
O my reproacher, do not frighten me with blame.
Chide me not, oh cruel clan

Sighs have risen high,
Sighs that soar and swell
And tears stream over my cheeks.
Tears that stream and quell

The pale camels yearned for their homelands,
The doves yearned for native nests
Their feet aching from travel, with a lovesick lover's yearning.
From prolonged journey, the camel groans and rests

My life after them is nothing but annihilation.
Without them, naught remains but death
So farewell to it, and to patience.
On it and patience, peace bequeaths
